Job Title: Swim Lesson Coordinator

Position Status: Part-Time (20-30 hours and willingness to work weekends)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $18.50

Reports to: Aquatics Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Lesson Coordinator at the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County will work in conjunction with the Aquatics Director to develop a safe and positive swim lesson program that meets the needs of the community. The program developed will be welcoming and respectful to all individuals while maintaining safe swimming conditions and learning environments in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with the Y policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Partake in the hiring process of new swim lesson instructors with the Aquatics Director and take lead on the onboarding process of swim instructors.
  • Regularly communicate with swim instructors including organizing swim instructors schedules to fit the swim lesson needs of the YMCA and the community.
  • Engages with swim lesson families to provide updates and accurate class placement for swimmers.
  • Train and develop swim instructor staff including planning in-service training opportunities by session.
  • Regularly fills in with scheduling conflicts and absences of swim instructors to ensure adequate lesson coverage.
  • Plan lesson scheduling to maximize pool space and promote fair pool usage.
  • Communicate with the Marketing Coordinator to adequately advertise swim lesson sessions.
  • Work with the Aquatics Director to increase community water safety awareness.
  • Collaborate with Youth Program Coordinator and Aquatics Director to execute Supportive and Adaptive Swim Program.
  • Be present for the first and last week of the swim lesson program session and as needed to support swim instructors.
  • Help maintain a clean and clutter free pool deck including the organization of swim lessons equipment and supplies.
  • Support the Aquatics Director in achieving budgeted goals in group swim lessons, private swim lessons, and swim teams, which includes working in direct service teaching programming.
  • Develops and implements innovative aquatic-related programs and events to service community needs.
  • Maintain all necessary Red Cross certifications.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of aquatics related program experience.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working with children.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications (will be provided in the first 90 days of employment if needed).
  • Able to meet the physical demands of prolonged exposure in an aquatic environment and working with children.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication.
  • Ability to use technology such as Gmail, Google and Microsoft Office Suite, Paycom, Daxko.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
