Mechanical Engineer – Electrical Packaging

Ideally, you will lead the design and thermal management of mechanical enclosures used in industrial high voltage applications. This role focuses on structural design, equipment layout, and thermal performance of power and control electronics housed in sheet metal fabrications used in electric drive systems for locomotives and mining vehicles. You will be responsible for supporting all phases of product development including requirements, detailed design, validation, and production support.

Pay Rate: $55 – $65/hr; The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.

Assignment Duration: 12–18 Months

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead structural design and layout of high-voltage industrial electrical enclosures (sheet metal, cast, molded, and machined components).
• Perform thermal and stress analysis using ANSYS Workbench and related tools for enclosure designs, heat sinks, and cooling systems.
• Design and integrate power electronics packaging for inverters, rectifiers, and control modules within high-voltage cabinets.
• Support the full development cycle, including concept design, 3D modeling (NX), FEA, prototyping, testing, and final release.
• Create and interpret technical drawings with GD&T, weld symbols, and detailed specifications.
• Develop concept trade studies, thermal simulations, and detailed performance predictions.
• Conduct validation and qualification testing for the mechanical and thermal performance of new components.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project deliverables related to quality, cost, and schedule.
• Work hands-on in heavy industrial environments and set up instrumentation for large-scale validation testing.
• Communicate engineering data effectively across internal teams and stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• 3–6 years of professional experience in mechanical design, electrical packaging, and thermal management.
• Strong proficiency in Siemens NX and ANSYS Workbench.
• Experience designing enclosures for shock/vibration, thermal management, and high-voltage isolation.
• Proficiency in sheet metal, machined, and cast component design.
• Experience with heat transfer techniques including conduction, convection, and forced air cooling.
• Hands-on experience working with large industrial or transportation equipment.
• Strong understanding of GD&T and ability to read/interpret complex technical drawings.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Proficiency in ANSYS Icepak or other CFD tools for thermal/fluid analysis.
• Familiarity with power semiconductor packaging (IGBTs, diodes) and related mechanical constraints.
• Experience with buss bar, terminal, and electrical connector layout and isolation design.
• Knowledge of liquid cooling systems, cold plate design, and heat pipe technology.
• Six Sigma certification or experience with statistical methods and process improvements.

Work Conditions:

• Must be available to work onsite daily in Erie, PA.
• Must be physically able to work around large machinery and in heavy industrial settings.
• Occasional support for setup of instrumentation and testing on mining and transportation vehicles may be required.
