About the job

The Boiler Engineer reports directly to the Process Engineering Manager at the Warrick Power Generating Station. The position functions to support the department in providing analytical and technical expertise in Boiler Reliability, Availability and Maintainability for the four coal fired boilers at the station.

The position acts as primary engineering support for the day-to-day maintenance and operational concerns, as well as the driver of strategic reliability improvement. This position is responsible for establishing repair criteria for all forced outages and owning the yearly planned outages.

Human relations and communications skills are very important to effectively perform this role. Incumbents must work with a wide variety of personnel at all levels inside and outside of the plant. This position functions as an in-house expert on a wide variety of mechanical subjects requiring extensive problem-solving capabilities that are aided through experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify long term opportunities for improvement through an evaluation on equipment reliability.
  • Analyze OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) data collected by Operations; use data to Pareto and help prioritize to identify and target equipment improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitate, coordinate and support teams in the development and execution of reliability improvements.
  • Evaluate operations and maintenance practices for improved asset utilization.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on equipment failures.
  • Provide technical expertise to ensure that equipment is accurately utilized.
  • Act as technical resource for Process Engineers, Project Engineers and the maintenance staff for troubleshooting and reliability issues.
  • Support Reliability Excellence (REX) core processes for implementation in production and maintenance departments.
  • Provide technical mentorship to Maintenance Planners and technicians for repairs and installations related to boiler outages.
  • Monitor and improve processes, procedures and equipment to eliminate environmental and safety hazards.
  • Identify knowledge gaps and act as a translator/trainer between business (availability, MTBF, Downtime, Utilization, Root Causes, etc) and the language of the shop floor to both operations and maintenance.

About You:

Crucial Knowledge & Skills/Education:

  • Deep understanding and ability to quickly comprehend electrical and mechanical systems and failure modes.
  • Demonstrated problem solving using data.
  • Passion to learn and improve.
  • Effective team leader and team member that energizes others.
  • Ability in influence business leaders, peers, and team members professionally with data, logic and presentation skills.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or closely related technical field, most commonly mechanical or welding engineering.
  • Minimum three years' experience in a heavy industrial plant.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with mechanical and electrical systems, and ability to develop expertise in unfamiliar industrial-scale systems.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance practices and reliability principles.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of progressively increasing responsibility and experience in engineering or maintenance.
  • Track record of facilitating resolution of issues between production and maintenance groups.
  • Training and experience with performing Root Cause Analyses.
  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Requirements
  • Familiarity with ASME Power Piping Code
