Job Title: Specialist, Communication FLSA Status: Exempt Posted Salary Range: $40,000 Employment Status: Full Time Department: Marketing and Communications Job Summary The communications specialist is an organized, enterprising self-starter with executive presence and a proven ability to successfully pitch and place news stories and create engaging content across all media. In addition, the communications specialist is proficient in and adaptable to new technology including production management and team collaboration software. A mastery of AP style is required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities A proven ability to meet deadlines is required as is the ability to work in a rapid-response, team environment. Project management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines are a must. Verbal communication skills, an open, collaborative approach; and the ability to maintain confidentiality are necessary for success in this role. Demonstrated experience in researching topics, interviewing and writing varied news and feature stories as well as pitching and placing news stories are essential. A desire to develop professionally and keep abreast of developing trends in communications is required. Essential Job Functions The communications specialist supports the communications and media relations needs for academic units and provides multimedia content and planning within the Office of Marketing and Communication. Under the supervision of the associate vice president of marketing and communication, the communications specialist is a key member of the communications team that advises and provides support on projects that are deemed shared priorities of the university and academic units that comprise the communications team. The communications specialist will advise administrators, faculty and staff on effective communications and media relations; develop communications plans and creative briefs for major initiatives; and work collaboratively with other units in the Office of Communications and Marketing on multimedia projects and initiatives. The communications specialist has knowledge of a broad range of journalistic and multimedia tools, such as media software for news distribution and monitoring, as well as professional guidelines for journalism and public relations. In addition, the communications specialist will have proven expertise in written and visual communication for print, web, and social media, an ability to make complex research and concepts accessible to varied audiences, and proven success to pitch and place news stories regionally.
