Assistant Branch Librarian

Description

The Assistant Branch Librarian acts to support the Branch Librarian to ensure the successful operation of an individual library branch.  They are responsible for coordinating and supervising activities, staff, maintenance, programs, etc. at the branch level, and assuming responsibility for the library branch in the Branch Librarian's absence.  Work requires the ability to plan, problem-solve, prioritize, supervise, and train.

Examples of duties:

• Assists Branch Librarian in the performance of duties.
• Ensures that all policies, procedures, programs, and projects are implemented and adhered to in all cases.
• Sets a positive and productive example of work habits, communication, and cooperation between all staff members. 
• Avoids and discourages behavior that may be construed as abusive, harassing, or discriminating in nature when dealing with staff and/or patrons.
• Follows the directives and instructions of the Library Director, whether these directives and instructions are delivered "in person" by the Library Director or by a designated staff member.
• Supervises operational routines; lays out and assigns work for the branch staff; gives staff on-the-job instructions as needed; supervises student workers.
• Assists in the maintenance of statistical financial records, bookkeeping, monthly and weekly reports, fine fund and petty cash boxes, etc.
• Assists with reference and book selection; aids in the best use of library materials; acts as readers' advisor; makes recommendations concerning book selection.
• Assists with implementing promotional, publicity, special, and/or informational projects.
• Performs reference duties, etc.; handles difficult situations with the public and local complaints; inter-library loan, etc.
• Ensures that the library building and grounds are kept in good and attractive condition and that the building maintenance is tended to.
• Assists with supplies.
• Assists with scheduling.
• Assists with planning and arranging displays.
• Assists with programming.
• Assists with outreach.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Master's degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited school.
• Valid Louisiana driver's license.
• Willingness to work days, evenings, and weekends as needed.
• Ability and willingness to operate a large vehicle safely and drive to all parts of Ascension Parish.
• Ability to push, pull, lift, carry, and otherwise move books, audio-visual items, and equipment by hand and cart.
• Strong computer skills for daily work with library resources and mobile technology.
