Serve as a chemist supporting the development and scale up of novel fluorescent dyes for use in flow cytometry. Individual will be primarily supporting the prototyping and scaling of development materials. Responsibilities include synthesis, purification, analysis, and post-modification of water-soluble dyes. Individual must be comfortable working in cross-functional teams under defined deadlines. Strong oral and written communication skills are required and experience in technical report writing, process mapping, and FMEA development is helpful. The successful candidate will have experience with fluorescent dyes, organic synthesis, macromolecule separations, and/or analytical characterization with excellent attention to detail and an ability to follow standard processes independently.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
Scale up of fluorescent dyes to support Process Development
Perform a variety of water-soluble dye processing, purification and characterization steps to support the generation of new products
Purification using common biochemistry techniques (TFF, SEC, etc.)
Remove solvent via rotary evaporation and/or lyophilization
Perform small scale dye labeling reactions according to established standard processes
Perform established reactions to convert/activate functional groups on final products
Optical characterization of the dyes including measurement of absorbance and fluorescence emission spectra.
Characterization of fluorescent dyes by analytical HPLC using established processes
Conduct statistical analyses such as Design of Experiments (DoE) and Gage R&R
Design pFMEA’s, control plans, batch records, and process flow charts
Prepare outgoing materials and supporting (QC) documentation
Contribute to team discussions, planning and training activities
Other responsibilities or projects as assigned by reporting manager
Requirements
Experience in organic synthesis/material science/analytical chemistry
Ability to follow established reaction protocols and standard processes
Experience with UV/Vis and/or fluorescence spectroscopy
Experience operating FPLC/HPLC/GPC equipment using established protocols
Practice in using rotary evaporator preferred
Practice in using glovebox preferred
Documentation in lab notebooks, checklists and basic databases
Familiarity with lyophilization and/or Tangential Flow Filtration methods a plus
Experience with DFSS, MiniTab/statistical analysis tools, DoE
Strong attention to detail
Works in a team-based environment
Multi-task to cover a variety of job functions
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
Ability to independently perform and analyze data and identify issues in routine tests
Familiarity with operation of routine laboratory instruments and applicable software
Education and Experience:
Typically requires BS in Life Science or Chemistry, MS preferred
Typically requires minimum of 3 years of experience in a laboratory setting. Strongly prefer 5 years or more experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
