Auxiliary Boiler Specialist

Brigham Young University’s Central Heating Plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Residing within the Central Heating Plant, our co-generation facility produces both electricity and high temperature hot water (HTHW is 400°F @ 300PSI). HTHW is distributed throughout campus via a closed loop system to provide buildings with heat, domestic hot water, and steam. For locations where our HTHW cannot reach, we operate and maintain an additional 60 auxiliary boilers. In addition to heat and electricity, the Central Heating Plant also provides water treatment for campus heating and cooling systems and ensures the water quality of our swimming pools, therapy pools, and spas.

The Auxiliary Boiler Specialist is responsible for the following: Ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of campus heating system auxiliary boilers and associated equipment. Provide uninterrupted service to university buildings for heating, steam, and hot water services. Inspect, tune, maintain and repair boilers, boiler components and associated equipment as required. Understand the efficient and reliable operational concepts of natural gas fired boilers, controls, heating water generation, distribution, steam distribution, condensate recovery systems and water treatment principles.

What You’ll Do In This Position

  • Supervision, Safety, and Project Management
  • Responsible for quality, schedule, housekeeping, and safety on each project within the Central Heating Plant.
  • Maintain the Campus buildings boiler service infrastructure
  • Perform regular Inspections, preventative maintenance, cleaning and repair of boilers, boiler controls, valves, pumps, fans, fuel delivery and condensate recovery system components on a regular schedule as by manufacture recommendation. Boilers range in size from 400,000 btu to 12.5 Mbtu.
  • Training & Continued Education
  • Fulfil all training requirements (e.g., plant SOPs, campus LMS, boiler operation and maintenance, etc.)
  • Respond to unscheduled daily events to support campus community
  • On-call After Hours, respond to after-hours emergencies for 1-week periods multiple times per year.

What qualifies you for this role:

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Have a valid driver’s license for day and night driving.
  • Two (2) years of boiler maintenance, mechanical equipment repair, or equivalent trade school education.
  • Have an understanding and ability to use hand and small power tools.
  • Demonstrate a mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Proficient in reading operations manuals and schematics.
  • Ability to read and understand project drawings and documents

Physical Exam And Lift Test Required

Physical Effort : Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.

Environment – Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters

  • Working in hot environments (high temp hot water areas) with high temperature water at high pressure.
  • Working in tunnels (high temp, sealed asbestos insulation, tight area)

Hazards – Frequent existing or potential hazards

  • Working from a ladder or platform to test, repair or install sensors or monitoring equipment

Preferred

  • Five (5) years of industrial maintenance, mechanical equipment repair, or equivalent trade school education. Proficient in welding and in light fabrication
  • Must be an independent worker without the need for constant supervision and be able to make decisions alone
  • Has excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills
  • Has proficient working knowledge of Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of combustion principles, gas fired boilers and their ancillary equipment
  • Know the CHP HTHW plant and campus piping configurations, pneumatic systems, Reverse Osmosis (RO) water process, compressed air, steam generation, and turbine/ boiler control systems
  • Understand the operational control sequence and be competent in the operation and firing of the CHP boilers & gas turbine/ electrical generation system
  • Understand and have working experience with gas turbine/ electrical generation system, natural gas/ fuel oil fired boilers and the use of the CEMS to evaluate the boilers operation and tune the combustion system to reach maximum operational efficiency.
  • Understand and have working experience with the operation of a tube and shell heat exchanger and the associated mechanical equipment required to maintain a safe and efficient operation
  • Read and understand electrical, electronic, logic, pneumatic, mechanical piping and flow schematics and be able to use them with good trouble shooting skills.

Pay Grade: 52

Typical Starting Pay: $31.25 to $40.50 an hour
