What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instructional Designer position at Brigham Young University?

Working alongside campus faculty and instructors to design online courses for BYU students. Each designer supervises his/her own student instructional design assistant(s).

Essential Functions

Incumbents will perform all of the following:

Instructional Design Leadership

  • Provide input on key strategies for portfolio development, processes and policies, and the development of new products.
  • Mentor other instructional designers.

Instructional Design and Course Management

  • Identify learning outcomes for each assigned project (needs assessment).
  • Work with instructors and/or faculty to create complete design plans based on learning outcomes in compliance with BYU Online standards.
  • Complete proposal documents, secure approval for design projects, and define and assign work to appropriate staff.
  • Establish, monitor, and seek approval for project budgets.
  • Assist instructors or faculty in creating learning assessments and activities that align with learning outcomes.
  • Provide feedback to multiple production teams to ensure lessons and activities are produced as designed.
  • Identify and implement appropriate and approved third-party learning activities.
  • Assemble learning activities in the appropriate LMS to create a coherent course.
  • Respond to design-related issues identified by the quality control team.
  • Supervise and provide direction to instructional design assistants.
  • Maintain a portfolio of online classes by responding to instructor needs, overseeing needed revisions, and suggesting quality improvements.
  • Collaborate with other designers, design assistants, media services, quality assurance specialists, and others to produce fully accessible, copyright-compliant online courses that meet industry and institutional quality standards.

Project Management

  • Establish deadlines with instructors and faculty.
  • Communicate deadlines, including ongoing modifications, to production teams and stakeholders.
  • Secure approval for and communicate to stakeholders changes to design plans
  • Work closely with production’s support staff, i.e., programming manager, media team, production manager, etc. to ensure the course or project adheres to appropriate instructional design principles and budget.
  • Help the program administrator and associate director ensure that courses meet quality standards, are on schedule and within budget.

Establish and Maintain Author Relationships

  • Maintain professional relationships with instructors and faculty.
  • Provide feedback to the supervisor regarding existing training materials for faculty and instructors.
  • Build relationships with university faculty through new course development and maintain relationships through completing major course revisions in conjunction with faculty/SMEs.

Training/Professional Development

  • Annually attend an instructional design-related conference or workshop, as recommended by your supervisor.
  • Participate in peer review activities within the instructional design group.
  • Research instructional design theories and best practices relevant to assigned projects.
  • Stay current on department policies related to instructional design.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and outstanding university citizenship at all times.
  • Mentor associate instructional designers and instructional design assistants.

At any given time, instructional designers may be working with several subject matter experts for the life of a specific project.

Minimum education/experience required:

Associate Instructional Designer (Level 52)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, a Teaching Degree, or closely related field, with one (1) or more years fulltime direct work experience in the field of course design and production or education.

Instructional Designer (Level 53)

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, a Teaching Degree, or closely related field, and (3) three or more years’ work experience in the field of course design and production or education.

Senior Instructional Designer (Level 54)

  • Masters’ degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, a Teaching Degree, or closely related field, plus seven (7) or more years fulltime direct work experience in the field of course design and production or education. Or an equivalent combination of a bachelor’s degree in instructional Design, Instructional Technology, or closely related field, plus nine (9) or more years of full-time direct work experience in the field of course design and production or education.

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

Required:

  • Proficient with an LMS (such as Canvas or Buzz)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.

Preferred:

  • Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Familiar with e-learning development tools (such as SmartBuilder, H5P interactives, or Articulate Storyline)
  • Experience with basic web page design
  • Some supervisory experience

Approximate Starting Salary:

Level 52: $59,500 to $77,000

Level 53: $66,500 to $86,000

Level 54: $74,500 to $96,500
