CASA & CASA IN ACTION SYNOPSIS:

Although CASA and CASA in Action share a common goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, they are separate organizations with their own board of directors. A set of employees at the two organizations, including the person filling this position, shares their time between the two organizations. This has no effect on salary or benefits.


DEPARTMENT SYNOPSIS:

The Health and Human Services Department responds to the needs of low-income Latinos and other immigrants and their families, utilizing service provision models that promote building the power of the immigrant community. This includes community education to prevent problems and build on community interest and assets, and working to impact trends that negatively affect low-income Latinos and other immigrants. The Health and Human Services Department includes the Health Promotion and Community Access, Legal, and Immigrant Integration programs.


POSITION SUMMARY:

CASA seeks a Certified Medical Interpreter to provide consecutive interpretation services during medical appointments in the Montgomery Care community clinic network of Montgomery County, MD. The Medical Interpreter is offered and accepts assignments based on availability and appointment schedules, so there is not a permanent schedule for this role. The Medical Interpreter will work exclusively around Montgomery County, MD. Assignments are for a minimum of 2 hours, at a paid rate of $38/hour.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, some of the following which are discussed and prioritized by the employee and supervisor:

  • Provide professional free-lance consecutive interpretation services for Limited-English Speaking (LES) clients at specialty appointments and in clinical settings adhering to Medical Interpreters Code of Ethics.
  • Work closely with Interpreter Services Coordinator to obtain interpretation assignments and to report services rendered on a previously defined scheduled.
  • Provides and maintains a schedule of availability and contact information.
  • Contacts LEP specialty care clients at least one day prior to specialty visits to confirm appointments and assist with directions to appointment sites.
  • Completes and submits biweekly reports and invoices for services rendered.
  • Submits provider satisfaction evaluation forms to provider clients when requested.


EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:

Certification in Medical Interpretation in Spanish-English or French-English, including 40 hours of training and 40 hours of practicum.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Fully bilingual in Spanish and English or French and English (Spanish preferred).
  • Previous interpreting and translation experience.
  • Trained in a 40 hour medical interpreter course, plus 40 hours practicum period. Must be able to provide certificate as part of application process.
  • Two years prior experience working with the Latino community or within a multi-ethnic community
  • Able to independently travel by car or public transport to community clinics in Montgomery County, mileage is not reimbursed.
