Job Description Summary
JOB SUMMARY
The Public Works Tech I is responsible for safe and efficient operation of construction equipment that requires acceptable performance of simple, routine, and repetitive procedures for operation. Under the direct supervision of the Streets Field Superintendent and/or their designated representative, performs general skilled maintenance activities and functions. Performs all general maintenance and construction duties as required for the general installation, maintenance and repair of public streets, alleys, rights-of-way (R.O.W.), sidewalks, and similar areas.
The incumbent's work schedule will be established by the supervisor and will include possible overtime due to the nature of the position. This position is also considered to be a member of the City Emergency Response Team.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs a wide variety of manual, skilled, and semi-skilled construction, and maintenance work, including mowing, edging, tree trimming, digging trenches, placing and finishing concrete, spraying herbicides, loading and unloading vehicles, moving materials and equipment, litter abatement, painting, street patching, and curb repair.
- Performs maintenance and repair work on a regularly scheduled basis without direct supervision; uses chemicals and/or other supplies.
- Completes routine street maintenance assignments and activities, without direct supervision, including, but not limited to: minor street repairs, street R.O.W. maintenance, and general repair and maintenance of public alleys and sidewalks.
- Cleans, maintains, and properly stores tools and equipment; performs minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment, including changing oil and other routine maintenance of appropriate equipment; cleans, maintains, and stores painting equipment.
- Operates motor-driven equipment and trucks on streets, highways, and over terrain; operates hand and portable power tools.
- Routinely operates the following light and medium power-driven equipment: aerial lift, air compressor, asphalt paving equipment, excavator, trencher, and various saws; may occasionally operate the following heavy equipment: dump truck, road grader, backhoe, dozer, skid steer, loader, front end loader, bucket truck, cement mixer, jackhammer, chipper, vibra-plate compactor, turf sweeper, and other equipment as assigned.
- Fabricates and installs street and traffic control signs; installs and repair streetlights; places traffic control and warning signs and monitors traffic flow.
- Maintains simple records; reads and interprets directions and sketches.
- Provides and participates in emergency responses which, while not all inclusive, may include traffic control for extended periods, continual and strenuous sandbagging, emergency repairs to public facilities, assisting with evacuations, etc.
- Assists other Public Works staff and departments in the planning and execution of their assignments; providing labor and/or technical assistance as required.
- Assists and supports other city departments as to general maintenance projects, needs, and activities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge or training of the methods, tools, and equipment of assigned trade area.
- Working knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment of other maintenance functions.
- Ability to maintain records on materials needed and used.
- Ability to perform a variety of construction, repair, and maintenance tasks.
- Perform a wide variety of physically strenuous tasks.
- Computer skills – Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office and data entry; use of small office equipment, including copy machines and multi-line telephone.
- Ability to access computer/smartphone to access email, work orders and timesheets.
- Ability to analyze problems, plan solutions, and communicate effectively.
- Dependability – Follows instructions, responds to supervisor direction; takes responsibility for own actions, and is consistently at work and on time.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
- High School Diplomas or G.E.D. plus 6 months of work experience.
- Reliable transportation and living with 45 minutes of the Public Works Department to be called in after work hours in emergency situations.
- Valid Texas State Driver's License
- Ability to obtain C.D.L. license(s), Class B or A if needed.
Anyone who poses a direct threat to the health and safety of himself/herself or to others in the workplace will be deemed not qualified for this position.
Special Qualifications:
Valid State of Texas CDL driver's license desired.
