Job Description
Our Development & Permits department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Plans Examiner II for Building Plan Review.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:
- Possess an understanding of permit types, codes and regulations pertaining to plan approval for residential and commercial buildings and structures.
- Gain the ability to navigate and utilize the Accela permit system, Mainframe, Outlook, GIS, Adobe Pro, and other related applications and databases.
Possess the skills necessary to review residential and commercial construction plans and site plans for compliance with building codes, accessibility codes, related laws and regulations, and City ordinances.
Have the ability to compose professional correspondence, review letters, and voice messages.
Be capable of effectively explaining information, concepts, and code requirements to a wide range of persons including the general public, contractors, design professionals, and others.
Provide excellent customer service and maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
Be capable of managing multiple tasks and projects in an organized and highly efficient manner.
Display leadership skills and provide direction and guidance to other personnel when needed.
Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required such as State Plans Examiner (residential & commercial) Building Inspector, Fire Protection Plans Reviewer, Zoning Administrator, Permit Technician, and others as determined by Department needs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
ICC or State certification as a Building Plans Examiner and Residential Plans Examiner is preferred.
Prior experience reviewing commercial construction plans for compliance with applicable codes and regulations is also preferred.
