Job Description
Our Development & Permits department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Plans Examiner II for Building Plan Review.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:
  • Possess an understanding of permit types, codes and regulations pertaining to plan approval for residential and commercial buildings and structures.


  • Gain the ability to navigate and utilize the Accela permit system, Mainframe, Outlook, GIS, Adobe Pro, and other related applications and databases.

  • Possess the skills necessary to review residential and commercial construction plans and site plans for compliance with building codes, accessibility codes, related laws and regulations, and City ordinances.

  • Have the ability to compose professional correspondence, review letters, and voice messages.

  • Be capable of effectively explaining information, concepts, and code requirements to a wide range of persons including the general public, contractors, design professionals, and others.

  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain good working relationships with co-workers.

  • Be capable of managing multiple tasks and projects in an organized and highly efficient manner.

  • Display leadership skills and provide direction and guidance to other personnel when needed.


Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required such as State Plans Examiner (residential & commercial) Building Inspector, Fire Protection Plans Reviewer, Zoning Administrator, Permit Technician, and others as determined by Department needs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
ICC or State certification as a Building Plans Examiner and Residential Plans Examiner is preferred.
Prior experience reviewing commercial construction plans for compliance with applicable codes and regulations is also preferred.
