What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Supervisor position at City of Columbia, MO?
Perform and supervise a variety of engineering tasks for projects and operations in the Public Works or Water and Light departments in the City of Columbia.
Essential Job Functions
- Plan, organize, coordinate, prioritize, assign, and evaluate the work of professional engineers and engineering staff in all phases of infrastructure engineering design and operations.
- Coordinate and oversee the preparation of engineering designs, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for construction projects.
- Assist in preparing the annual capital budget; monitor expenditures; and review estimates of time and resources.
- Participate in and coordinate the review of plans for construction projects to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of engineering documents, including plans, specifications, contracts, maps, standards, and the like. Draft resolutions, ordinances, and memos for City Council consideration.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and developers to ensure adherence to proper standards and codes and to ascertain service needs.
- Coordinate projects and provide support for other City departments and governmental units.
Ancillary Job Functions
- Answer inquiries from the public regarding construction projects and areas of interest.
- Conduct research; evaluate and make recommendations regarding proposed and existing facilities and services.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in professional engineering or closely related work, including supervisory experience.
- Professional Engineer’s license.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
- Thorough knowledge of professional engineering principles, practices, and methods.
- Thorough knowledge of construction and zoning standards and regulations.
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office products, ArcMap, and AutoCAD.
- Excellent technical writing skills and ability to prepare accurate plans, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports.
- Knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques.
- Ability to plan, organize, coordinate, prioritize, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate engineers and engineering staff.
- Ability to make accurate engineering computations and drawings.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, engineers, architects, and the general public.
Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
- May be exposed to inclement outdoor weather, mechanical oils, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, loud noise levels, risk of electrical shock, or potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals.
- May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.

NOTE: A Professional Engineer’s license is required for this position.
