Starting Salary: $45,572.80
- After Six Months of Successful Employment: $46,571.20
- After One Year of Successful Employment: $47,465.60
- Maximum salary is achieved after two successful years of employment.
An employee in this classification in the Equipment Maintenance Section of the Public Service Division works under immediate supervision to learn and become practiced in aspects of repairing and servicing City-owned equipment. They may have overtime work as required and is subject to call-in outside normal working hours. For an Equipment Mechanic Trainee to be promoted to Equipment Mechanic I, the person must be proficient in the descriptive list of work and satisfy supervisors' expectations.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
- Perform technical tasks in the maintenance and repair of light to heavy-duty gasoline, propane, and diesel-fueled equipment
- Perform oil changes, lubrication of moving parts, coolant flushes, rotate and balance tires, and brake jobs
- Repair starters, alternators, batteries, belts, hoses, etc.
- Repair suspension components, fuel systems, clutch assemblies, fuel and water pumps, starters, alternators, brake systems, air conditioning, electrical components, belts, hoses, tires, etc.
- Learn to operate Oxyacetylene torches and MIG welders
- Other duties, as assigned
By closing date of this announcement, an applicant must:
- Be a citizen of the United States or a resident alien with the right to work in the United States; and
- Be at least 18 years old; and
- Meet one of the following:
- Have a high school diploma or a valid equivalency certificate; or
- Be able to obtain a high school diploma or a valid equivalency certificate within one year of date-of-hire; or
- Have a certification from an industry-related trade / technical school; or
- Be able to obtain a certification from an industry-related trade / technical school within one year of date-of-hire; and
- Meet one of the following:
- Have a minimum of one year of paid work experience in automotive/truck/construction equipment repair within the last five years; or
- Have a minimum of one year in a recognized automotive technician program within the last five years; or
- Have a minimum of one year in a high school automotive trades program within the last five years; and
- Have, or be eligible for, a Michigan Department of State Motor Vehicle Mechanic Trainee Permit; and
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record; and
- Possess, or be able to obtain within six months of date of hire, a Group “A” Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brakes and “N” (tanker) endorsement; and
- Possess, or be able to obtain within six months of date of hire, a valid Industrial Truck Driving Permit; and
- Be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.
NOTE: An employee in this classification is subject to all requirements of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991, as amended.
PARTS OF EXAMINATION AND WEIGHTS
NOTE: Up to 20 applicants with the most appropriate and relevant level of education and experience will be invited to the interview. Applicants must pass the interview in order to be placed on the eligible list.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the equipment mechanic's trade
- Principles of internal combustion engine operation
- Hazards and safety precautions of the mechanic's trade
- Installation and repair methods of air conditioning systems
- Service and repair methods of air brakes and air systems
- Service of electrical systems and equipment
- Proper use of oxy-acetylene torches and MIG welder
Ability to:
- Diagnose and repair operational problems on vehicles and equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks on a variety of vehicles and equipment
- Understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions
- Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, charts, etc.
- Handle all physical requirements of the class
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and user departments
