Educational Requirements:
- Graduate of accredited high school or GED.
- Must have successfully completed an 800 - hour basic training course recognized by the Kentucky department of criminal justice training.
- Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, business management, law enforcement, or a related field (preferred), Or a combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job, may be substituted for: A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive law enforcement experience, 6 years of progressively responsible police experience including at least 5 years in a supervisory or command-level role.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Must have never been convicted of any felony.
- Must have never been prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm.
- Must be able to successfully pass medical examination and a physical fitness test.
- Must have never been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the military.
- Must not have had certification as a peace officer permanently revoked in another state.
- Thorough knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, and relevant laws.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Sound judgment and decision-making abilities in high-pressure situations.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in law enforcement practices.
- Proficiency in utilizing modern law enforcement technologies and software.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a drug and background test.
Job Summary
Under general executive and administrative direction, plans, organizes, directs, supervises, and coordinates the activities of the Oak Grove Police Department in the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the prevention of crime and the protection of life and property; and does related duties as required.
Essential Duties:
- Provide visionary leadership, direction, and guidance to the police department.
- Develop and implement strategic plans, policies, and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the department.
- Foster a positive organizational culture and promote professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior among department personnel.
- Manage the overall administration and operations of the police department.
- Develop and manage the department's budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and resource allocation.
- Establish and maintain effective communication channels with department staff, other law enforcement agencies, government officials, and the community.
- Ensure the enforcement of laws and ordinances within the jurisdiction, maintaining public safety and order.
- Coordinate and direct the investigation of criminal activities, ensuring thoroughness and adherence to legal procedures.
- Collaborate with community leaders, organizations, and residents to develop and implement crime prevention and community policing initiatives.
- Recruit, select, and hire qualified personnel for the department.
- Provide effective leadership and supervision to police officers and civilian staff, fostering professional growth and development.
- Oversee training programs to ensure personnel are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans to handle critical incidents and natural disasters.
- Maintain situational awareness of potential threats and develop proactive strategies to mitigate risks.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with the community through outreach programs, public events, and regular communication.
- Attend community meetings, address concerns, and work collaboratively with community members to address public safety issues.
- Promote transparency and accountability by fostering trust and open dialogue between the police department and the community.
Reasoning Ability:
- Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and evaluate the activities and performance of police personnel.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The police chief is an executive level key leadership position for The City of Oak Grove and the Oak Grove police department. This position is the department head responsible for overseeing the following departments/positions within the police department: major, captain, and or police lieutenant.
