Responsible for providing clerical and customer service support for the Assessor’s office. Work responsibilities require general knowledge of the department’s work methods and procedures. Work performed is moderately complex and requires a moderate degree of decision making.

Responsibilities
This is an office-based job in a dynamic municipal building. While performing the duties of the Administrative Assistant, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, and sit. Occasionally the employee is required to stand, walk, reach, and lift/carry items typically less than 10 lbs.
This position requires good vision to prepare reports, and view maps, and good hearing for telephone and in-person communication. Use of a personal computer and telephone, as well as filing requires manual dexterity in combination with hand-eye coordination.
Operates standard office equipment including computers and keyboards, at efficient speed; and move throughout the municipal building which may include flights of stairs. Lifts/moves objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds.
HOURS
Monday – Friday, 35 hours per week
8:30am-4:00pm
SALARY
Starting Salary $18.38 - $19.40 an hour
Annual increase up to $25.45 an hour

Responsibilities
- Greet public and respond to assessment-related inquiries regarding valuations, property records, property ownership, betterments, tax abatements and exemptions for real estate, motor vehicles, and personal property. Locate land parcels on Assessor’s maps. Receive payments from public.
- Process motor vehicle abatements.
- Maintain and update files and databases including changes to property record, changes of address.
- Inform public of abatement and exemption application procedures and certification guidelines. Assist taxpayers in the completion of applications for abatements and exemptions (residential property and automobile excise tax).
- Does all the clerical work for statutory exemptions.
- Schedule appointments.
- Prepare abutters lists.
- Prepare routine memos, correspondence, reports, and other documents.
- Calculate and receive fees; balance cash drawer; prepare deposits.
- Track department expenditures against budget. Track purchase orders. Process invoices.
- Performs other similar and related duties.
- Requires a High School diploma or equivalent. Additional specialized training or experience in accounting/bookkeeping and secretarial skills and less than 1 year’s related experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Requires knowledge of English, grammar and accounting/bookkeeping. Requires skill in word-processing, spreadsheets and databases for data entry, calculations, and preparation of letters and memoranda.
- Requires strong communication skills to work effectively with a diverse population.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
