JOB TITLE: SANITARIAN
DEPARTMENT: DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH
The City of Pittsfield's Public Health Department is seeking an experienced Sanitarian to conduct inspections of businesses providing services to the public, including but not limited to, restaurants and other food handling facilities, housing, nursing homes, pools beaches, tanning facilities, body art facilities, summer camps, and facilities selling tobacco products ensuring compliance with local and state sanitary codes.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop programs and procedures of environmental sanitation
- Collect samples, perform or arrange for laboratory tests, and analyze, interpret and prepare reports on findings
- Responds to, investigates, interprets and take actions relative to complaints of violations of state and local rules & regulations, including preparing reports, issuing appropriate orders and other enforcement action in cases of non-compliance.
- Conducts general inspections in the interest of protecting the public and environmental health; Conducts inspections of housing to ensure compliance with all health codes
- Collaborates with other City of Pittsfield Departments, including Fire, Community Development, Legal and Inspections on housing code enforcement; Inspect restaurants and other food production and handling facilities to ensure compliance with state and local sanitary codes; Preparation and testifying at Board of Health Hearings and court proceedings
- Assists in investigation of foodborne illness outbreaks using proper investigative procedures
- Responds to public health emergencies, including those involving hazardous waste or disposal of biological wastes
- Educate City workers and the general public in the field of environmental sanitation, food handling techniques, emergency procedures and other areas related to public health
- Attends continuing education programs as needed or requested by the Director of Public Health. Obtain appropriate certification as needed or as requested by the Director of Public Health
- Perform necessary administrative duties. Perform any other duty as needed to protect the public and environmental health and as required by state & local rules, regulations, laws & bylaws

QUALIFICATIONS*
- Two or more years’ experience in public health, sanitary or environmental investigations or other equivalent knowledge or experience.
- Successful candidate must already be certified in the following areas or willing to become certified within 18 months of hire; housing/code enforcement, water sampling, lead determination, soil evaluation, Title V septic, food handling certificate, asbestos as well as any other areas deemed necessary by the Director of Public Health or Senior Sanitarian.
- Knowledge of state sanitary codes, especially as related to housing and food service regulations. Knowledge of permitting and licensing regulations.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills needed to deal with the public, employees, elected officials, Board of Health, other city agencies, social service agencies and the courts.

WORKING CONDITIONS*
Must be willing and able to work under a variety of conditions, including outdoors, in restaurants, businesses and private homes. Periodically be available to work on weekends and evenings as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Operates standard office equipment including computers and keyboards, at efficient speed; and move throughout the buildings which may include flights of stairs. Lifts/moves objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds. Daily driving.
HOURS
Monday – Friday, 35 Hours per week

SALARY*
Starting rate $22.01 - $23.24 per hour
Annual increases up to $28.10
