The City of Portland is seeking to hire multiple Utility Worker I's to join the Portland Bureau of Transportation!

About The Position

Job Appointment: Full time

Work Schedule: 5 days a week (usually includes a weekend day)

Language Pay Premium Eligible: This position may be eligible for Language Pay Differential for qualifying employees

Position Summary

About the current position: As part of the Portland Streetcar Maintenance Team, you will be required to perform assigned duties independently and in conjunction with co-workers, taking direction from PSC Management and Dispatch/Control. The Utility Worker I is responsible for performing unskilled/semi-skilled work, routinely using hand & power tools in the performance of their assigned tasks, safely operating motor vehicles and using a forklift.

Typical Duties/Examples of Work

  • Streetcar cleaning & servicing: Sweeping & mopping, exterior washing, interior detailing, refilling reading materials, refilling sand hoppers (requires routine lifting of buckets of sand).
  • Platform cleaning & servicing: Garbage collection, sweeping, pressure washing, graffiti removal, snow & ice removal.
  • Facility cleaning & grounds maintenance: Cleaning of offices, breakrooms, restrooms, and maintenance areas. Cleaning of streetcar storage yards and other right-of-way areas, including foliage control and leaf pick-up.
  • Landscape maintenance: Use of tractors and mowers, string trimmers, hedgers, backpack blowers, and other power equipment and hand tools to care for turf and shrub beds.
  • Traffic control/flagging: Perform work zone flagging and assist track & signal maintainers with maintenance tasks.
  • Reads and sends emails, records work hours, completes basic reports, and work orders.
  • Drives compact and full-size pickup trucks in parks and on city streets.
  • Responds to calls to work during emergencies.
  • Other duties may include customer service, forklift operation, and motor vehicle operation.

About the current vacancy's division: Portland Streetcar (PSC) is a City owned transit agency serving the vibrant central core of Portland. PSC division assets include 17 streetcar vehicles, 65 passenger platforms, 2 maintenance facilities and over 14 miles of right-of-way, all of which require various types of support from the Utility Worker I job classification.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation's current vacancy is considered a safety sensitive position as well as an essential employee. This means that this position is subject to random drug screening and is required to respond to calls to work during weather emergencies and perform related duties as assigned.

Portland Parks and Recreation's Land Management works in Portland parks to ensure they are clean and safe for the community to enjoy. They perform basic park maintenance, including picking up garbage, emptying trash cans, cleaning restrooms, removing graffiti, clearing sidewalks, and other maintenance tasks. They drive vehicles and operate small equipment such as weed eaters, backpack blowers, and pressure washers. They may work alone or as part of a crew. Applicants must describe in their supplemental question responses and résumé how their education, training, work experience, and/or lived experience meet each of the following minimum qualifications:

  • Ability to perform various types of manual labor, such as a variety of cleaning, loading and unloading equipment, and landscape maintenance, including clearing of paths, trimming grass and weeds, and spreading mulch.
  • Ability to learn and use safe working practices and learn and follow instructions.
  • Ability towork courteously and effectively with a range of co-workers & contractors, including the ability to respond appropriately to questions & concerns from co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use hand and power tools, such as pressure washers, blowers, string trimmers, snow removal machines, and the ability to perform minor servicing, adjustments, and repairs of assigned equipment.
  • Ability tosafely operate motor vehicles such as pick-up trucks and vans, to perform duties.
  • Ability towork independently and in conjunction with co-workers.

  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass a Pre-hire Evaluation Examination
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
