What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Engineering Inspector position at City of Raleigh North Carolina?



The Senior Engineering Inspector provides paraprofessional engineering support, inspections, and civil engineering for a variety of Engineering Services Petition Projects, Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), and Greenway Projects. Work involves advanced specialized activities and overseeing work performed by skilled specialists.

  • Inspects and monitors the construction of a variety of Roadway Design/Construction projects involving but not limited to roadways, bridges, culverts, storm drains, traffic signals and signage, sidewalks, greenways, water mains and sewer mains
  • Works directly with project contractors to ensure all conditions of the NCDOT and City specifications, special provisions, contract documents and construction plans are being met
  • Coordinates testing of materials used in all aspects of construction (concrete, asphalt, soils, etc.)
  • Prepares, updates and/or maintains project files, tracking documents, daily reports and other standard and special documentation
  • Performs measurements, collect required field paperwork and tabulate pay items quantities for authorization of payment to the contractor
  • Completes advanced specialized and technical activities in assigned engineering function and serves as a liaison for the contractor and project engineer
Education and Experience:
Associate Degree in engineering or directly related field and three years of paraprofessional engineering experience, preferably in area of assignment

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Techniques and methods for organizing, prioritizing, and assigning and monitoring work
  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
  • Utilize a computer and relevant software applications such as Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/Outlook)
  • Construction math computations and concepts
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations 
  • Comprehending spec books, contracts and construction plans
  • Operating assigned tools and equipment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with ability to utilize communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information  
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.

Salary : $52,988 - $85,668
