The City of Raleigh is hiring a Survey Crew Chief to lead in survey crew operations. This position is part of the Roadway Design and Construction Division of the Raleigh Engineering Services Department and is tasked with conducting field survey work.


In this role, you will set up and stake construction layout points, download/upload and process data, set site control points using GPS systems, utilize tablets and associated software for field data collection and construction stake out. You will be a crew leader with daily surveying tasks assigned that will include conducting topographical and boundary surveys, calculating and staking on construction sites, establishing rights of ways and other easements or property lines, and researching property information. On occasion you will be tasked with equipment maintenance and assisting other crews with their assigned duties.

About Us:
The Roadway Design and Construction Division is a part of the Engineering Services Department at the City of Raleigh.  Our engineers, inspectors, survey crews and supervisors are responsible for improving the physical infrastructure that keeps Raleigh moving including streets, sidewalks, curb ramps, right-of-way and water and sewer for Capital Improvement Projects.

This position will be the lead in the field for a crew of the city’s surveying team. The Survey team fulfills all staking needs for several departments in the City of Raleigh although construction staking is our main priority. We provide several survey products such as boundary surveys, easement exhibits, right of way location, topographic surveys, elevation benchmarks and much more. You’ll join a collaborative team that works closely with other city departments, contractors, inspectors, engineers, consultants and project managers.

  • Operate survey equipment to collect and/or utilize survey data for construction layout, boundary surveys and topographic surveys

  • Calculating and inputting grades for construction

  • Prioritizing project survey needs based on tempo of construction

  • Completing boundary surveys using best practice methods and within legal error limits

  • Establish and maintain local ground control utilizing GPS systems

  • Download/upload of survey data onto survey data collectors and network servers; processing, analyzing and editing of field data

  • Delegation of tasks to instrument operator to ensure workflow is efficient

  • Operate a City-owned vehicle to travel to and from work sites on a daily basis 

Education and Experience:

Associate's Degree or 2 Years of College in Engineering, Surveying or related field; 1 to 3 years' experience in paraprofessional engineering, field surveying, or related work

OR 

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Professional Land Surveying License

Knowledge of:

  • Surveying Standards of Practice set forth by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors

  • Grade interpolation and related mathematical concepts

  • CADD software

  • Basic filing and record keeping principles

  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices

  • Uses and properties of supplies and specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment

  • Public service and field-based communication protocols

Skills in:

  • Following directions and meeting standards

  • Prioritizing and organizing field work and related equipment

  • Providing attention to detail in assignments

  • Proofreading and error correction

  • Maintaining and updating data and documentation

  • Comprehending reference books, manuals and construction plan sheets

  • Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications

  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Work Environment and Physical Effort:  
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  
Work Environment:  
Work is typically performed in an office or similar indoor environment. Employees may occasionally work in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), construction site, or in a vehicle.  
  
Working Conditions:  
Employees may occasionally interact with individuals who are hostile or irate or be exposed to loud noises (85 decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
