The City of Vacaville is currently recruiting to fill one (1) position for Maintenance Worker I/II in the Field Utilities section of the Utilities Department and to establish an eligibility list for possible future use. Depending on the applicant pool, candidates may be selected at either level.

Salary Range
Maintenance Worker - Field Utilities I- $59,960.51 - $72,882.18/year
Maintenance Worker - Field Utilities II - $67,736.07 - $82,333.47/year
A 2% COLA is scheduled for 11/1/23

A City of Vacaville Maintenance Worker I/II-Field Utilities performs a variety of maintenance, repair, installation and construction work related to water distribution, wastewater collection and storm drainage systems. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • repairing, replacing and cleaning lines;
  • flushing and TVing, excavation, trenching, pavement replacement, installation of sewer laterals and water service mains, and repair of valves and meters;
  • use of a variety of tools and equipment, including heavy construction equipment.
Maintenance Workers may be required to respond to emergency standby calls on nights, weekends and holidays. This position is "safety sensitive" as defined by the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Program and is therefore subject to the random Drug/Alcohol Testing Program. Maintenance Workers perform mandatory standby duty which includes the requirement to respond to emergency callouts within 30 minutes.

The Maintenance Worker I/II- Field Utilities classification is flexibly staffed and may be filled either at the I (entry level) or II (journey level), depending on the qualifications of the candidates. Employees in the Maintenance Worker I-Field Utilities classification may advance to the Maintenance Worker II-Field Utilities level after meeting higher qualifications.

ABOUT YOU

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have a strong background and experience in maintenance and construction knowledge, including:

  • Equivalent to high school diploma, supplemented with training or college-level courses related to water distribution, water quality, wastewater systems and other related topics; and
  • One year experience performing construction, repair or maintenance work, preferably related to plumbing or pipefitting. Maintenance Worker II-Field Utilities requires one (1) year of experience performing duties of a Maintenance Worker I - Field Utilities in the City of Vacaville. If hired from the outside, must have two (2) years of experience in construction, repair or maintenance work related to plumbing and pipefitting.
Some other desirable knowledge, skills and abilities include, but are not limited to:
  • knowledge of water and wastewater utilities systems
  • ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction
  • familiarity with operation of a variety of power tools and heavy equipment
  • ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work
LICENSE, CERTIFICATE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Maintenance Worker I-Field Utilities:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are required as conditions of initial and continued employment. A valid Class B driver's license with Tanker Endorsement must be obtained prior to completion of probation. Some positions may require an unrestricted Class A driver's license with Tanker Endorsement.

A valid certificate or a notice of passing the examination for the Grade I Water Distribution Operators issued by the State of California Department of Health Services (DHS) is desirable and must be obtained prior to completion of the 12-month probationary period as a condition of continued employment.

A Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate from the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) is desirable and must be obtained prior to completion of the 12-month probationary period.

Maintenance Worker II-Field Utilities:
Possession of a valid California Class B driver's license with a Tanker Endorsement and a satisfactory driving record are required at the time of hire. Some positions may require an unrestricted Class A driver's license with Tanker Endorsement.

Valid certificate or a notice of passing the examination for Grade II Water Distribution Operators issued by the State of California Department of Health Services (DHS) is required at the time of hire.

A valid First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification from the American Red Cross or other certified and recognized training organization must be obtained prior to completion of the 12-month probation.

In the event the State of California requires a Haz Mat Technician or Haz Mat Endorsement to perform current functions, employees must obtain and maintain such certification.

The maintenance of valid licenses and certificates is a condition of continued employment.
