What are the responsibilities and job description for the Activity Instructors-Summer Camp/After School position at City of Whitewater?

This posting is to recruit for After School Activity Leaders for the 2024-2025 School Year. This position is perfect for college students majoring in Education.  Get paid, hands-on experience, working with children!

Duties include supervising, planning, and facilitating After School program for children ages 7-12.  Previous experience working with children desired.

Location will vary, dependent upon what Whitewater School District School has available for the After School Activity Leader. 


This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary.

  • Plans, leads and participates in recreational arts and crafts, skill development activities and indoor and outdoor games in a summer camp environment.
  • Provides safe and enjoyable environment for children; assists with them days and other special events.
  • Reports anything “unusual” or any out of the ordinary issues immediately to the supervisor.
  • Teaches human relations skills such as sharing, good sportsmanship and getting along with others; monitors that rules and regulations are followed by campers.
  • Responsible for the physical well-being of children participating in the programs. Monitors safety and health and administers first aid for minor injuries, when necessary.
  • Communicates with parents to inform them of children’s accomplishments and behavior
  • Maintains clean and orderly play areas and supply storage areas.
  • Distributes lunches/snacks as appropriate.
  • Aids in the supervision of drop-off and pick-up according to group schedule.
  • Creates informational posters and fliers, decorations for classrooms used for programs
  • Chaperones field trips
  • Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits a variety of reports such as attendance and misbehavior reports, accident reports, schedules of events, time sheets, etc.
  • Uses a variety of art supplies, sporting and fitness equipment and audio-visual equipment  in performance of daily tasks.
  • Assists other counselors with maintaining discipline during each activity. Leads group from one activity to another in an orderly manner.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Parks and Recreation personnel, City maintenance workers, children, parents and the public.
  • Arrives on time for work.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school graduate/GED

Language Skills

  • Ability to analyze data and information using established criteria, in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternatives. Ability to compare, count, differentiate, measure, copy, record and transcribe data and information. Ability to classify, compute, tabulate, and categorize data.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with participants, City personnel, Department personnel and City residents.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to calculate percentages, fractions, decimals, volumes, ratios, present values, and spatial relationships.
  • Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.

Other Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with children, adults, families, and individuals with disabilities..
  • Ability to operate equipment required to perform essential job functions, including:  phone system; desktop computer; and copy machine.
  • Proficiency in modern office practices and procedures and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public.
  • Ability to work effectively in cooperation with fellow employees.
  • Ability to work in and maintain an environment that deals with sensitive and confidential information.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, and the ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration.
  • Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as computer and other office machines, and or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing slightly skilled movements such as typing and to operate various pieces of office equipment.  
  • Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities and differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
  • The employee must exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, occasionally involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, crouching, crawling, kneeling, stooping and or moving up to 50 pounds.

  • The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet, but noise can increase due to activities.
