Position Summary

The Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (FWCB) is seeking an individual to serve as a member of our advising success team to provide quality and professional advising and student success/career development instruction, effective communications and outreach, and assist with student success data collection and analysis for undergraduate students and contribute to our Unit's overall promotion of student success.

The Academic Success Coordinator for FWCB is a full-time, 12-month Administrative Professional position. This position requires in-person work during regular business hours as well as some weekend and evening duties.

The Academic Success Coordinator plays a critical and supportive role in strengthening Departmental efforts to provide quality advising and instruction to promote undergraduate student success.

The primary functions of the Academic Success Coordinator are to

  • Foster the successful transition of the student to the university environment.
  • Build a sense of community among our undergraduates and across our Department/College.
  • Promote autonomy and enable students to effectively navigate curriculum/degree requirements through both advising and primary teaching responsibilities for our "New to the Major Seminar",
  • Provide preparatory instruction for students who will be studying abroad in Japan.
  • Assist with student success data collection and analysis.
  • Assist with student success outreach communications for focused student groups.
  • Promote timely graduation.
  • Serve as a critical resource while also connecting students to other resources to help them succeed.

The Academic Success Coordinator's duties include advising students; connecting students to faculty, career development opportunities and resources; maintaining student records; interacting with FWCB faculty and staff members; assisting the Undergraduate Program Coordinator and Advising Team with monitoring and assessing student success data; serving on academic advising-related committees at the Department, College, and University levels; serving as the lead instructor for our new-to-the-major seminar, co-instruct for our Education Abroad Program in Japan by providing preparatory lecture content prior to students' departure, advising throughout Ram Orientation, assisting with other related, student success events and initiatives; and building strong, collaborative relationships across campus.

The Academic Success Coordinator reports directly to the Undergraduate Program Coordinator and works closely with the FWCB Advising Team, the FWCB Curriculum Committee, Faculty, and the Warner College Academic Success Collaborative.

Essential Job Duties

Academic Advising

  • Advise FWCB undergraduate students regarding curriculum, course offerings, and progress toward their degree; work with the Undergraduate Coordinator, Advising Team, and Faculty regarding career-specific and experiential learning opportunities for students.
  • Assist with developing, coordinating, and delivering programming on desired outcomes, effective progress towards graduation, graduation plan development, and overall success for each student.
  • Assist with student success data collection and analysis * Assist with student success outreach communications for focused student groups.
  • Develop familiarity with issues faced by diverse populations of students (e.g., non-traditional, first generation, veterans, underrepresented populations, transfer students) and develop/adapt advising approaches accordingly.
  • Provide students with ample office hours (virtual and in-person), regular access (email), and reliable responsiveness.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of student interactions and advising.
  • Aid in the implementation of a plan to work with Academic Probation students and address the cause of the student's difficulty.
  • Provide support for student clubs and organizations.
  • As appropriate, provide letters of recommendation and serve as a reference for advisees/students.
  • Assist with/advise new students who attend Ram Orientation and Ram Welcome.
  • Meet with high school students, parents and guests, and prospective transfer students.
  • Pursue regular professional development and updates to advising best practices.
  • Assist with the development and revision/updating of informational documents/ flyers, and outreach communications (Canvas/Navigate), etc. for FWCB undergraduates; assist in maintaining and updating advising publications, manuals, and curriculum check sheets.
  • Treat each student as an individual, understanding that every student's path to degree attainment may be different.
  • Bring new and innovative ideas to the advising group, share resources, and maintain a willingness to engage in conversation and effective collaboration within the Department, College, University, and external partners.
  • Develop knowledge base of different areas within the fields/careers in wildlife biology, conservation biology, fisheries biology, ecology, and natural resources.
  • Assist with all steps/systems that promote student success - overload requests, graduation contracts, substitutions, outreach, etc.

Instruction

  • Coordinate and teach department's New-to-the-major Seminar and preparatory lectures for students who will be studying abroad in Japan.
  • Assist with updating student success content, building engagement and interactive learning opportunities.
  • Develop partnerships and arrange for guest speakers from across the University and with employers.
  • Develop and maintain Canvas learning portal.
  • Work with Peer Advisors on grading of assignments.

Campus Collaboration/Service/Administration

  • Assist with conceptualizing, creating, and delivering programs for interventions to reduce impediments to student success indicated by data on student performance.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and partner or serve on committees with key partners across campus including and not limited to: the Career Center, Academic Advisors, other Academic Success Coordinators, Faculty, Collaborative for Student Achievement, Health Center, Case Management, Housing and Dining Services, University Honors Program, Cultural Centers, and other campus offices to facilitate and support student success.
  • Serve as our Advising Team's liaison and a contributing member of the Academic Success Coordinator Network at the College and University level to share best practices to promote student success.
  • Collaborate with FWCB Advising Team and Faculty to continue to develop a quality, comprehensive, and supportive undergraduate experience.

Assessment

  • Assist with tracking, summarizing, and analyzing success indicators; measure progress of individual students and groups of students (e.g., concentrations), and assist with annual reporting/assessment of student success and advising impact.
  • Utilize information provided by assessments to best meet needs of FWCB, WCNR, and CSU students and explore ways to continually improve FWCB Advising efforts and outreach.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree with at least one year of higher education advising experience OR a bachelor's degree with three years of higher education experience advising or supporting students.
  • Experience in student affairs working directly with students in a college/university setting; providing academic advising and/or conducting student development activities such as orientation, diversity support services, or career services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs, wildlife biology/ecology, fisheries biology/ecology, conservation, or other natural resources related field
  • Experience teaching, presenting to, and/or facilitating large groups on topics related to student development, student success, and student career development, as well as preparation for study abroad
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs, Canvas, Navigate, ARIES, Transferology, as well as other university data systems
  • Experience developing collaborative partnerships across campus and outside of campus to benefit student development, degree completion, and career opportunities
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, responding to, and presenting student data to faculty and administration
  • Experience managing multiple projects in a timely and highly organized manner
  • Communication skills, including presentation, writing and technical/computer skills.
  • Experience initiating and implementing of projects and/or program development
