Lifeguard

*We currently have a strong need for Bus Counselors to ride the bus with the campers from the Boston area. Save on gas money and make up to $900 extra on your way to work! We need Bus Counselors from Boston, Somerville, Chestnut Hill & Brookline. Priority will be given to applicants who can commit to being a Bus Counselor for the summer.

Want to be a lifeguard on a beautiful beach lake at an award winning day camp? This is as rewarding and interactive as a lifeguard position can be! You will be part of a large team of waterfront staff and receive ongoing training and feedback. You will lifeguard from the beach, on floating docks or on our inflatable adventure course. Our lifeguards will be assisted by counselors during free swim periods and be supported by an experienced Waterfront Director at all times. The upkeep and basic maintenance of the lakefront beach area and docks is also part of the job. Come and join our dynamic and diverse team!

JOB & CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

ESSENTIAL

• An enthusiastic, motivated, warm, friendly, caring individual.
• Strong swimmer.
• The ability to communicate, through patience and clarity, with children and co-workers.
• Must be lifeguard certified*. This can be done after the interview. We will help you find a local lifeguard certification course and reimburse up to $200 for certifications and $100 for re-certs.
• 16 years old by the start of camp on June 24th.

*Please read the prerequisites at the bottom to understand the physical requirements of becoming a lifeguard.

DATES, HOURS AND PAY

• 9:00 am to 3:15 pm (this includes a 30-minute break per day)
• June 24th to Aug 16th (8 weeks) with an option for up to two extra weeks.
• Paid staff training dates earlier in June are also required.
• Mon to Fri each week, except July 4th when we are closed.
• The pay is $18 per hour and hours are guaranteed.
• We have many opportunities to make extra money...Bus Counselor or our extended AM or PM program can make an additional $900
• Pre-camp work starting in early May is also available!

LOCATION

• Sharon, MA but with free bus transportation from all over MA.
• Housing is NOT included.

Everwood Day Camp is an outdoor focused summer camp featuring many physically demanding activities on land and water. Staff members are regularly required to walk, hike, and otherwise move in woods, fields, beaches, and lakes. To perform the job, each staff member of Everwood Day Camp must be physically able to travel around a large rural environment (fields, woods, beach, etc.) over uneven ground on a regular basis. Lifeguard Certification Details

Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:

• Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 350 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
• Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
• Swim 200 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

• Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
• Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
• Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface.
• Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prerequisite 3: Complete an underwater swim:

• Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 – 7 feet of water.
• Resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards.
