What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Unit Coordinator - Transitional Care Unit position at Fairview Health Services?
The Health Unit Coordinator is the primary receptionist and concierge for the unit. This role builds the “first impression” guests (patients or visitors) experience during their stay from the welcome and greeting; through the check in and checkout process. During the guest’s stay this position interacts closely with patients, families, physicians and the multidisciplinary team in a highly organized and professional manner. Ensures the outstanding patient experience is achieved by displaying effective customer service, problem solving and communication skills in a friendly, thoughtful and empathetic manner. Performs a variety of clerical functions including: managing patient charts, coordination of data flow and sharing of general hospital information/directions.
Responsibilities
Coordinates activities of nursing station to support patient care staff.
- Orders and maintains adequate stock of office supplies.
- Performs telephone message taking and directs communication in a timely fashion.
- Optimally uses communication systems for both routine and emergency transactions.
- Orders patient meals per patient procedure daily.
- Answers patient intercoms/call light promptly and relays patient requests in a timely manner.
- Maintains unit information sources such as daily census sheets, brain-boards, diet sheets, and schedules in a confidential manner.
- Interacts with other health care time members, patients and public in a prompt and friendly manner.
- Maintains order and cleanliness on within the nursing station desk and supply areas.
- Works collaboratively with charge nurse to coordinate scheduling of tests, lab work and other department procedures.
- Collaborates with all nursing staff team members.
- Uses time efficiently and actively participates in productivity of department.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Previous Health Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant, or Nursing Station Technician experience or completed technical, college or internal Fairview HUC program, or equivalent and related experience.
- Communication skills such as clear speech, ability to read, legible handwriting, and basic computer skills are required.
- 1 year of customer service
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, and hospital procedures is preferred.
