What are the responsibilities and job description for the Prevention Coordinator (part-time) position at Framingham State University?
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
As a part of the Well-being and Prevention team, the Prevention Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of campus-wide substance use prevention strategies, programs, and initiatives. The Coordinator will collaborate with campus departments, student organizations, and local community partners to promote healthy behaviors, reduce substance misuse, and provide education and support for students.
In addition to campus-wide prevention efforts, the Prevention Coordinator will provide individualized substance use assessments and counseling to students on a referral basis, using evidence-based approaches and behavior change models. Outreach to, and assessment of at- risk student populations will be a special focus of the coordinator.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assess campus needs related to student substance use through surveys, focus groups, and other methods.
- Collect and analyze data on substance use trends, including participation in ACHA/NCHA surveys, to identify issues and inform programming.
- Design and implement evidence-based programs focused on substance misuse prevention, harm reduction, and behavior change.
- Implement a support group for students seeking to reduce or cease substance use and be prepared to provide referrals to other recovery resources as appropriate.
- Provide training to Peer Health Educators, Resident Assistants, and other student leaders on substance misuse, risk factors, and available resources.
- Meet with students referred by the Office of Community Standards for substance use violations to provide assessment and psychoeducation.
- Provide direct support to students referred by the Health Center, Counseling Center, or through self-referral.
- Use motivational interviewing, harm reduction strategies, and other best practices in individual consultations.
- Maintain a referral network for off-campus recovery groups and connect students to appropriate resources based on individual needs.
- Promote wellbeing programs through materials such as brochures, flyers, social media, and digital campaigns.
- Serve as a campus resource for departments seeking support for students affected by substance use.
- Represent the department on University committees and task forces focused on alcohol and other drug issues.
- Build and sustain partnerships with local community organizations and prevention coalitions to enhance services and resources for students.
- Assist the Director of Well-being and Prevention with student engagement, outreach events, and wellness programming.
- Provide logistical and content support for campus-wide events, trainings, and prevention campaigns.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and student engagement using data-informed approaches. Tracks individual participants while maintaining individual student privacy and reports data on all programs and activities planned and delivered. Data requirements include reporting on participant demographics, strategies employed, lessons learned, programmatic recommendations, and measures of student related outcomes (e.g., persistence, retention, health data) achieved by those who engage in sponsored programs versus comparison of non-participants.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Public Health, Substance Abuse Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Qualifications and experience to conduct clinical substance use assessments and individual counseling using behavior change models.
- Demonstrated experience in substance use prevention, health education, or counseling.
- Knowledge of current substance use trends, public health principles, and prevention strategies in a higher education context.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage a variety of audiences.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and prioritize effectively.
- Experience building and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Familiarity with harm reduction approaches and motivational interviewing.
- Training in BASICS, or similar intervention models.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish or English and Portuguese are strongly encouraged to apply.
Additional Information:
This is a part-time non-benefited, contract position, not to exceed 18 hours per week. The scheduled hours are flexible. The minimum pay rate is $40 per hour. This position is externally funded through MA SUCCESS Funding. Ongoing employment is contingent on continued funding.
