Position Title: Child Nutrition Elementary and Middle General Worker

Status: Non-Exempt

Salary: See District Salary Schedule

Reports to: Cafeteria Manager

Location: School Cafeteria

Hours: 6:30 am – 1:30 pm

Duties and Responsibilities: other duties may be assigned

  • Effectively utilizes district technologies appropriate to the position and assumes responsibility for attending district training needed to successfully perform designated responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
  • Maintains regular attendance
  • Assists in the preparation of breakfast and lunch
  • Anticipates and effectively addresses unforeseen crises associated with large groups of children in the cafeteria
  • Serves on the serving line for breakfast and/or lunch
  • Keeps walk-in freezer/cooler clean and in order
  • Complies with State Law and District policies and regulations
  • Helps maintain oven, stoves, refrigerators, mixers, steamers and other equipment in clean and sanitary condition, assist in washing dishes, pots, pans, and other utensils
  • Cleans tables in dining area before and after lunch
  • Has serving line ready when first group of students come through which includes prior counting of trays and plates before lunch
  • Basic computer data entry
  • POS entry during breakfast and lunch
  • Count down registers for accuracy after completion of serving
  • Performs all other related duties that may be assigned by the Cafeteria Manager or person in charge
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and cafeteria area
  • Provide clean and orderly garbage collection containers
  • Coordinate and receive deliveries and manage inventories
  • Flexible in work schedule (jobs) and able to adapt to the fast pace of a functioning kitchen
  • When preparing/serving food, proper gloves and aprons should be worn and practice proper hygiene at all times.
  • When changing tasks (one food item to another), wash/sanitize hands and replace gloves.
  • Maintain a professional manner at all times

Education And/Or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • ServSafe and Healthy Edge classes are mandatory. These classes explain proper temps, food preparation, food storage, food borne illnesses, etc.
  • Attend mandatory In-Service meetings
  • Must have 1-2 years of experience (restaurant, kitchen, food service, etc.) and have knowledge of cafeteria work

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret written information related to cafeteria, as provided by Cafeteria Manager or Director of Child Nutrition
  • Ability to read and comprehend written directions/instructions and /or recipes

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Breakdown – divide/multiply a standardized recipe

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the methods, applications, and types of food preparation
  • Knowledge of serving sizes and cafeteria equipment
  • Capable of learning how to order food and run reports
  • Capable of running the “Point of Sale” system
  • Ability to work well with others, follow written and oral instructions, cooperate and assist co-workers
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and staff members
  • Must be able to attend state-conducted workshops
  • Maintain proper personal appearance and cleanliness
  • Report and rectify unsafe conditions in work area
  • Other duties may be assigned as business necessitates
  • Detail cleaning to meet Health Dept. standards such as scrubbing floors, baseboards, walls, coolers, freezers, shelving, and employee restroom, etc.
  • Make sure all cookware, utensils, are detailed cleaned to present to the public while serving, i.e. grease buildup or stains

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods of time; talk or hear and sometimes sit. Slip-resistant shoes are required and can be purchased at Wal-Mart for around $20. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to push or lift 40 lbs. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interest with the students, the public and other staff.

Dress code:

  • T-shirt (plain or school related) and pants/jeans or scrubs. No capri pants or shorts
  • No jewelry (earrings, watches) except a plain band
  • No nail polish, artificial nails, or eyelashes
  • Hair up off your neck with hair net
  • Closed toe and slip resistant shoes
  • All tattoos must be covered

Other Qualifications:

  • Satisfactory criminal records check, pre-hire and annually thereafter, if applicable. Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide work authorization.

The noise level in the work environment is from moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
