What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Paramedic position at Gaston County Government?
The mission of Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) is to preserve and enhance the quality of life for the residents and visitors of Gaston County by providing superior quality Emergency Medical Service.The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
Current certification in North Carolina as a NC Paramedic (NRP preferred) with current certification and/or Instructor in the following:
Must be able to obtain IBSC CP-C certification within six months of hire.
Experience and training in responding and controlling hazardous material incidents
Candidates selected will undergo a background check. The candidate selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
- Inducting individuals with Opioid Use Disorder who qualify for treatment into the MAT program
- Providing inmates in the MAT program with their daily dosing of medication
- Maintaining a rapport and communicating frequently with the jail medical provider regarding inmates’ treatment and health status
- Works closely with the Peer Support Specialist to build relationships with the inmates
- Assist inmate with transition to a community-based MAT program through existing Bridge Program
- Serves as a trained "navigator" of community resources
- Provides outreach education to inmates
- Work includes participating in community outreach education, prevention programs, and participating in continuous in-service training
- Provides proactive care that is intended to help improve the overall health and wellness of program participants
- Requires excellent rapport, understanding, and communication with the patients and their family members
- Common services will include: assessment (vital signs, blood pressure, labs such as glucose levels, diagnostic cardiac monitoring, medication compliance and reconciliation, adherence to discharge instructions, etc.)
- Works in cooperation with other stakeholders/key medical providers in order to offer coordinated and integrated care (jail health provider, physician offices, home health agencies, hospice, long term care facilities, public health department, social services, etc.)
- Consistently demonstrates professional behavior and performs proactive interventions which support the Mission, Vision, and Values of Gaston County Emergency Medical Services
- Builds and advocates for the program
- Creates community engagement
- Provides outreach education to the public
- Maintains all knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform this role
- Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence
- Attends staff meeting and committee meetings as required
- Performs related duties as required
Current certification in North Carolina as a NC Paramedic (NRP preferred) with current certification and/or Instructor in the following:
- ACLS
- PHTLS
- PALS/PEPP
- AMLS
- CPR
- ASLS (preferred)
- NRP (preferred)
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License and not have MORE than 3 points on driving record
Must be able to obtain IBSC CP-C certification within six months of hire.
