High Plains Mental Health Center, is a licensed Community Mental Health Center, Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic, and licensed Substance Use Disorder treatment program dedicated to an aggressive pursuit of providing a comprehensive mental health program to the residents of Northwest Kansas. The Supported Employment Specialist’s work focuses on delivering Individual Placement and Support (IPS) services for individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness and other assigned patients requiring employment services. The Employment Specialist develops employment opportunities thru the establishment of partnerships with local businesses and DCF Vocational Rehabilitation.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Carries out all phases of IPS Supported Employment service, including intake, engagement, assessment, job placement, job coaching, and follow-along supports before step down to less intensive employment support.
2. Assist all supported persons in identifying interest, skills, and abilities through the implementation of a well-structured assessment process.
3. Assist supported persons in a rapid search for competitive employment.
4. Engagement of supported persons in their homes and employment settings.
5. Engage and building professional working relationships with prospective employers. Frequent contact with employers is required.
6. Counsels and/or teaches individuals or groups on techniques for obtaining and maintaining employment.
7. Actively participates in mental health treatment team meetings that discuss supported persons and their employment goals with shared decision-making.
8. Delivers assigned services designated in supported persons’ treatment plans and in accordance with annual service hour expectations.
9. An essential function of the position calls for the ability to provide transportation to patients, as well as have the ability to be able to travel to deliver services, respond to emergencies, and travel to the assigned office as needed. Therefore, the Supported Employment Specialist must maintain a valid driver’s license and a driving record consistent with reasonable insurability (no alcohol-related incidents in the last five years). Loss of driver’s license or reasonable driving insurability may be cause for immediate personnel action, up to and including termination of employment.
Qualifications:
(1) Have at least a BA/BS degree or be equivalently qualified by work experience or a combination of work experience in the human services field and education with one year of experience substituting for one year of education;
(2) possess demonstrated interpersonal skills, ability to work with persons with severe and persistent mental illness and/or severe emotional disturbance, and the ability to react effectively in a wide variety of human service situations;
(3) meet the specifications outlined in the CMHC licensing standards in regard to any ongoing requirements (as in completion of training requirements according to a curriculum approved by the Division of Health Care Policy); and
(4) pass KBI, DCF Child Abuse Check, Adult Abuse Registry and motor vehicle screens.
