What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Reserve Officer position at Holland, City of (MI)?
The Reserve Officer program is a voluntary community service program in which citizens of the community work with and assist Holland Department of Public Safety regular officers. Some of the details that Reserve Officers are assigned to are paid, but the majority is volunteer. This job requires an investment of some equipment purchases if you are selected and complete the police training. This investment ranges from $1,200.00 to $1,800.00.
The above is only a portion of the rules and regulations that govern the operation of the Holland Police Reserve Unit.1. Volunteer for service a minimum of 6 hours per month consisting of:3. Enforce city ordinances while on active duty within the city limits.
4. Enforce state statutes when working in conjunction with and at the direction of a regular officer.
5. Maintain availability for on call service when sudden active duty is necessitated by unusual events such as storms, floods, major traffic crashes, power outages and the like, as determined by the Chief of Police or his designated supervisors.
6. While working for the Holland Department Safety in the capacity of a Police Reserve Officer, direction will be taken from the officer on duty whom a reserve officer is working in conjunction with or any regular or reserve supervisory staff. (Exceptions to this would be if the officer or supervisory staff was asking a reserve officer to commit an unlawful act or be involved with any action that would be dishonest or involve lack of integrity). Any exceptions shall be immediately reported to the Reserve Captain and Captain of Patrol or the Chief of Police.
7. In the event a member of the Reserve Unit has knowledge of misconduct on the part of a regular or reserve officer, or any other city employee, he/she shall furnish such information to the Reserve Captain, who will immediately inform the Patrol Captain or Chief by phone, followed by a written document outlining the information received.
8. All Reserve Officers, as a condition of appointment, shall remain familiar with and follow all the policies, procedures, rules, orders, and directives of the department.
9. Reserve Officers shall appear at hearings, trials, and other job-related court proceedings as required by the department or prosecutor's office/city attorney. Notice for appearance is the responsibility of the department.
10. At no time will any reserve officer be involved as a driver of any marked or unmarked vehicle during a police pursuit.
11. Reserve Officers should not initiate traffic stops without being accompanied by a regular officer. The only exception is if the Reserve Officer is on duty, within the city limits, and the violator is causing an extremely serious and immediate danger to the public by actions that are personally observed by the Reserve Officer and the traffic stop has been authorized by a regular full-time Holland Police Officer1. Ability to make proper physical arrests of violent, resistive, or combative suspects, and use force when appropriate and necessary.
2. Train and qualify in handgun and rifle use according to department specifications.
3. Complete all training requirements to include use of force tools, tactics, and techniques, according to department specifications.
4. Must demonstrate ability to prepare, write and/or dictate thorough investigation and follow up reports.
5. Ability to view and operate a computer in a variety of conditions including in a vehicle, in bright conditions, in low light and dark conditions.
6. Ability to use current computer technology and software to query for investigative purposes and complete data entry for reports.
7. Must demonstrate ability to interact with people in a positive manner.
8. Ability and license to drive assigned police vehicles.
9. Ability to deal with belligerent, verbally abusive, loud, and uncooperative individuals while remaining calm and professional
