Holtec International
Camden, NJ Full Time
POSTED ON 8/5/2025 CLOSED ON 9/5/2025

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Components Estimator position at Holtec International?

Overview:
Holtec International is a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry. Holtec is designing grid-scale energy systems to revolutionize the power industry. We are seeking a Mechanical Components Estimator with an engineering or fabrication background.
A successful candidate will perform development of accurate and detailed cost estimates for the mechanical components of Holtec’s power plant technologies, including its flagship SMR-300TM Small Modular Reactor (SMR), Holtec’s Concentrated Solar Power Plant (CSP), and Green Boiler TM molten salt energy storage system. This estimator will be responsible for producing bottoms-up estimates, engaging with supply chains, and reviewing subcontractor cost estimates. Candidates should be able to collaborate across engineering, procurement, and factory fabrication teams to ensure cost predictability and feasibility. The role requires strong expertise in fabrication applications, including sequencing of subassemblies, welding processes, machining, and logistics. Candidates will work closely with staff from Holtec’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities to develop estimating methods, productivity data, and component estimates.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Cost & Schedule Estimating:
    • Develop detailed cost estimates for the fabrication power plant components.
    • Evaluate material take-offs, supplier/vendor quotations, and subcontractor inputs, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the scope of work and project requirements.
    • Review and incorporate historical data from estimates, cost data, indices, subcontracts, and other data to inform unit rates.
    • Work closely with engineering and fabrication staff for a well-understood fabrication plan for mechanical components and to inform process and equipment needs.
    • Organize and maintain a structured approach to managing cost data. Maintain comprehensive documentation for estimate assumptions, methodologies, and data sources, consistent with industry best practices.
  • Data Analysis & Benchmarking:
    • Work with fabrication teams to develop estimate input data, including production rates of skilled labor categories, inspections and tests, and machines.
    • Conduct market research to gather cost benchmarks and trends.
    • Evaluate major assumptions, risks, and uncertainties associated with estimates. Perform risk analysis, contingency planning, and sensitivity analysis to identify cost drivers and potential overruns.
    • Consolidate cost estimates into comprehensive financial models that support project budgeting, decision-making, and forecasting.
  • Project Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Review and validate cost estimates provided by subcontractors, ensuring that all portions of work are accounted for and aligned with project specifications.
    • Work closely with engineering, procurement, construction, and project management teams to collect input and ensure alignment on scope.
    • Present cost estimates and schedule proposals to internal and external stakeholders, including project sponsors, regulatory agencies, and financial partners.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Weld Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fabrication, application engineering, or similar roles.
  • Knowledge of industry best practices and standards for cost estimation methodologies.
  • Proficiency in estimating software, including Excel.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to communicate complex cost data clearly to project stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate with fabrication staff to develop estimate data.
  • Must be eligible to work under U.S. federal code 10 CFR 810.

Desirable Additional Qualifications:
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Estimator (CE), Project Management Professional (PMP), or other related certifications are highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with welding processes and non-destructive examination techniques.
  • Familiarity with the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Prior experience in fabrication roles (welder, machinist, quality control, etc.).
