As a technologist, you are asked to operate MRI scanners and to ensure that the procedure produces quality images and information for the health care professional to make an accurate diagnosis. You have the chance to work and interact directly with patients as you ensure that they are comfortable and calm. Utilize your medical knowledge by interviewing patients, explaining the procedure, and placing the patient in the appropriate spot on the table. Technologists are also organized, detail-oriented people who are familiar with the anatomical area that is being scanned and the patient’s history. Develop relationships with patients as you help diagnose their condition as an MRI technologist.
Job Responsibilities and Expectations
- Operate equipment for imaging and anything related to various areas of the body in order to provide high-quality images and information for patient diagnosis.
- Address patient concerns during the procedures, and explain the MRI process to the patient in a way that is informative but also reassuring.
- Use tact, courtesy, and poise when dealing with patients, keeping them calm and ensuring that they get the best care possible.
- Communicate effectively with other health care professionals to ensure the message is getting across appropriately.
- Troubleshoot peripheral equipment and scanners to ensure that equipment is operating properly to avoid downtime or delays that affect patient satisfaction.
- Ensure patient safety with aseptic injection technique and pre-screening for any contra-indications before the procedure.
- Supervise and guide new staff into their job description by providing training with regular checks, direction, and qualified work samples
- Handle high-stress environments calmly
- Take patient history
- Screen patients before examination for eye surveying, cardiac pacemakers, and other implanted medical devices and complete and sign patient screening forms
- Ensure patients are comfortable during MRI examination by providing headphones or earplugs to reduce unpleasant noise
- Follow the laid down procedures and policies
- Understanding the use of software, such as medical image processing software
- Make sure the MR scan room is clean, organized, and safe to perform MRI examinations
- Conduct proper inventory and restock rooms
- Help with QC program
- Ensure there are backup copies of all patient images. This is done by ensuring the transfer of patients images to a storage device
- Perform additional duties as required by management
- Should be flexible with the schedule and reliable
- Should have required proper permits and licenses in a particular state or country
- Must be able to transport self and patients through the department and hospital
- Required to be able to stand, walk, sit, carry/lift (up to 35 pounds), turn, push, pull and stoop
- Potentially exposed to infectious disease, disagreeable odors from patients, anesthetics, disinfectants, and/or chemicals
- May be exposed to controlled radiation exposure
- Will be subject to call on a regular or as scheduled basis
- Will be scheduled various shifts and days of the week as necessary to efficiently and effectively provide services
Job Requirements
- Completion of Radiologic Technology program
- Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Certified in MR, within 12 months of hire - Required
