Individuals employed as a Supervisor of Special Education are responsible for monitoring policy
and procedures for special education regulations while interpreting district, state, and federal
regulations. The position also requires knowledge of the developments and trends in special
education and the ability to communicate current practices to Lynchburg City Schools
administrators, staff, and community stakeholders.
1. Ensure eligibility and Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are compliant and following all VDOE
regulations governing special education programs
2. Serve as a resource to building administrators and LEAs to interpret policy
3. Serve as a special education family liaison/resource to families to understand and engage in the
special education referral, evaluation, reevaluation, and eligibility and IEP process.
4. Ensure school division is knowledgeable in the areas of continuation of services in the least
restrictive environment
5. Understand approaches to collecting and analyzing data related to performance indicators
6. Provide training and VDOE updates to Special Education Department Chairs and building LEAs
7. Provide professional development for Special Education Teachers and staff with a focus on
research based strategies for students with disabilities
8. Monitor/Oversee the adapted Division Wide Program for students who are working toward an
Applied Studies Diploma (to include implementation of the VAAP assessment program and
scoring process)
9. Possess current knowledge of Students with Disabilities guidelines for Assessment Participation
10. Carry out classroom observations with building administrators to evaluate special education
services in the classroom and/or evaluate the implementation of instructional practices for
students with disabilities
11. Collaborate with division, local agencies, and state staff (such as TTAC) to ensure initiatives
revolve around Results Drive Accountability implementation
12. Serve as a Central Office consult to the Special Education Advisory Committee
13. Collaborate with school division Social Workers, School Psychologists, Speech Pathologists,
Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapistss, Vision Teachers, and Teachers of the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing
14. Provide evidence-based instructional strategies and support to general and special education
teachers for students with disabilities
15. Provide professional development opportunities and guidance to newly hired Special Education
teachers
16. Support data collection systems and advise the school-based team in the implementation of data
collection systems and analysis of the data to support data-informed decision making and effective
instructional practices
17. Collaborate with school building administrators and other central office departments to develop plans
and recommendations for the inclusion of students with disabilities in all aspects of the educational
program
18. Assist school case managers with monitoring and collaboration with Private Day and Private
Residential Providers for students with disabilities
19. Assist building administrators with supervision and monitoring of Lynchburg City Transition programs
such as the Lynchburg City Schools transition program housed at CVCC and Project Search

This is a 12-month contract position with full benefits. This job description in no way states or implies
