More About The Role
The Compliance Team in the Water Quality Program is looking to fill two (2) positions. Clean water is our goal, and our team mainly focuses on ensuring that industrial and municipal facilities are in compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Program and other applicable local, State, and Federal regulations.
Industrial and municipal facility inspections include coordinating with facility personnel, conducting site inspections to identify stormwater pollution issues (storage practices, housekeeping, etc.), reviewing Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), and issuing reports.
Our team also administers the Water Quality Buffer Program for streams and lakes within Mecklenburg County. The buffer administration includes site inspections to ensure erosion control measures are installed prior to construction activities within the critical area of the Water Supply Watersheds. Pre-construction site meetings are conducted for dredging and shoreline stabilization projects to confirm potential buffer impacts. Stream delineations/identifications are performed to confirm jurisdictional channel locations for 401/404 permitting and buffer determinations.
We inspect lift stations and work with multi-family communities to verify compliance with applicable local, State, and Federal regulations.
Our team is responsible for leading the Municipal Facility Monitoring Program, which includes sampling stormwater outfall discharges.
We administer the Water Quality Safety Program.
We work closely with our co-permittees and the City of Charlotte to complete municipal facility inspections, annual reports, and annual assessments.
The position will also serve as a Water Quality Emergency Responder, which requires 24/7 on-call duty approximately 2 to 3 weeks per year and whose primary function is responding to water quality emergencies and enforcing local water quality ordinances.
What Will i Be Doing
You will participate in and may have the opportunity to lead one or more of the above programs. Leading a program can include coordinating staff and supplies (as needed), training (annually), reviewing inspection reports for accuracy (daily), implementing changes in protocol (as needed), and completing a program report and assessment (annually).
You will help administer the Water Quality Buffer Program.
You will participate in our streamwalk program, which requires you to walk in various streams to look for pollution problems and to inspect stormwater infrastructure.
You will also respond to numerous citizen requests and environmental incidents involving
potential pollution issues, such as spills and discharges, in our surface waters.
You will enforce local surface water regulations by conducting inspections and issuing Notices of Violation.

Conduct field tests, sampling, and investigations to assess the natural environment and to
determine sources of and methods for controlling pollutants in air, water and soil
Perform public education and outreach activities in various settings such as the field, office or
classroom environments
Assist with the preparation of grant applications to fund environmental programs as directed.
Operate environmental monitoring equipment, following quality controls and good laboratory
practice (GLP).
Experience
