The North Carolina Department of Administration is seeking applicants for a Maintenance/Construction Technician III for our Facility Management division. The primary mission of Facility Management is to provide a safe and healthful work environment for employees and the public in a cost effective and energy efficient manner. This mission is accomplished by performing routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance to state facilities owned by and allocated to the Department of Administration.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ability to install plumbing systems per plans and specifications.
  • Ability to diagnose and make repairs to malfunctioning plumbing systems, fixtures and components.

Division/ Department Overview
The Department of Administration serves as the business manager for North Carolina state government and provides leadership to state government agencies for the effective, efficient, economical and equitable delivery of services to the public. The department also provides assistance and services to several advocacy programs that serve diverse segments of the state’s population that have traditionally been underserved. The agency’s mission directs departmental efforts to: acquire, develop and maintain properties and facilities; create and operate an efficient system to purchase and dispose of goods and services to meet the needs of government agencies; provide excellent operational services to state employees; achieve fair and equitable opportunities and representation for various segments of the population that have special needs; and to provide administrative support to independent state government agencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

QUALIFIED APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT AN APPLICATION THAT CLEARLY REFLECTS WORK EXPERIENCE THAT DEMONSTRATES ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of building hot and cold water systems, steam and hot water heating systems.
  • Knowledge of the installation and repair of electrical circuitry and the installation of equipment including heating, cooling, and hot water systems.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and electrical building codes.
  • Experience with diagnosing and making repairs to malfunctioning plumbing and electrical systems, fixtures, and components.
  • Experience with using the tools and test equipment commonly used in the diagnosis and repair of plumbing and electrical systems.

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • The position requires standing for long periods of time and performing manual labor.
  • The individual hired for this position must be capable of strenuous lifting, crawling and working at heights up to sixty-five feet or more as well as working in confined spaces such as steam tunnels and manholes.
  • The position may require exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
  • The position may require the use of a respirator and other personal protective equipment Medical certification is required to verify the individuals' ability to wear and use a respirator. This is a condition of employment.
  • The position requires the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or in excess of 20 pounds of force frequently and/ or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The position may require working in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, sewage and water line pipes and other confined areas.
  • The individual hired for this position must be familiar with building, life and safety codes.

Other Requirements:

  • Valid NC Driver's License with acceptable driving record. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License or acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record.
  • Certificate of Completion Asbestos Operation Maintenance and Removal Training within one year of hire.
  • Certificate of Completion Entry Permit Confined Space Training within one year of hire.
  • Upper Pulmonary Health Physical.

SPECIAL NOTE: Employee is required to wear a uniform, use safety equipment and follow safety regulations which are provided by the state. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
