Purpose of the Position: The Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) provides direct care and treatment services for individuals needing support, care, and treatment for mental health and/or AODA problems. The BHP will perform client/patient care duties, and will create and facilitate activities for clients/patients that cultivate stabilization, overall well-being, growth, skill development, and learning. As an essential part of multidisciplinary treatment team, the Behavioral Health Professional works to create a healing and trauma-informed environment for the individuals in the treatment programs. BHP’s will work in collaboration within one of NCHC’s Acute Care department behavioral health programs, which include: adult behavioral health hospital, youth behavioral health hospital, adult crisis stabilization unit, youth crisis stabilization unit, and Lakeside Recovery AODA/mental health residential unit. behavioral health hospital and/or crisis stabilization care team to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living skills of patients or clients utilizing the services.

Education, Licenses, Certification, Skills And Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Education:
    • BHP I (Paraprofessional): High School degree or equivalent and 4 years of experience providing mental health services
    • BHP II: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or certificate in mental health or AODA
    • BHP III: Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or related field
  • Required Skills:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Proficiency in documentation of services provided in an Electronic Medical Record
    • Excellent problem-solving skills
    • Clinical judgment skills
    • Physical ability to participate in restraints of patients when necessary
    • CPR certified or can be obtained upon employment

  • Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Education, Licenses, Certifications and Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services field
    • Knowledge of verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques
    • Experience with facilitating therapeutic groups and activities
    • Ability to provide patient centered and trauma informed care
    • Passion for working with behavioral health population
    • Valid Wisconsin driver's license and appropriate auto insurance coverage as required by North Central Health Care
    • Use of a personal vehicle

Essential Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintains regular and predictable on-site attendance
  • Works in other Acute Care Programs beyond designated home program as needed/directed, and performs the essential duties of the program being worked
  • Provide or support treatment in groups or on an individual basis. Treatment includes self-care, basic living skills, leisure, social skills, coping skills, self-esteem, therapeutic arts/crafts, de-escalation, etc.
  • Utilizes an Electronic Medical Record to document daily interactions, medication administration and services provided and completes all required clinical documentation adequately, and within required timeframes
  • Assists in development of treatment planning and support to clinical team.
  • Performs general patient care services including activities of daily living, serving meals, and medication administration/management
  • Assists in patient admission, orientation, and discharge processes
  • Promotes Person Centered Care in all interactions with patients/clients
  • Collaborates with treatment team to prevent adverse outcomes and ensure treatment plan is followed
  • Assists with department duties as assigned, including cleaning, sanitizing, maintaining supply inventories, checking refrigerator temperatures, etc.
  • Demonstrate comfort and participation in, and utilizes provided training practices and mechanisms at all times in, providing client/patient de-escalation and physical restraint/seclusion measures as needed during behavioral health emergencies within the Acute Care department and other NCHC departments/programs
  • Participates in emergency codes to ensure patient safety and staff security, utilizing trained Crisis Prevention Institute de-escalation and physical restraint techniques with teammates as necessary (Reflected in Very Heavy under Functional Demands)
  • Utilizes on-call managers, appropriate chain of command, and NCHC policies and procedures as necessary to ensure quality of client/patient care and effective problem solving

    • Clinical documentation, billing, and EMR records are accurate and completed in a timely manner – including progress notes, contact notes, safety checks, treatment plans, screenings and other job-specific documentation and assessments
