General Description:
The Accountant performs general accounting and financial reporting duties for PLU.
Responsible for supervising university grant accounting, reporting, billing and budgeting
functions. Posting journal entries and processing accounting transactions throughout the year culminating with the Accountant being a major contributor in the preparation of the year-end financial statements. Reports to the Senior Accountant and Director of Financial Operations.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Provides primary accounting function for all grant monitoring administration, compliance, grant accounting, and financial reports of awarded grants through their final closing.
- Prepares quarterly endowment unitization and market value per unit calculations.
- Prepares annual endowment distributions in cooperation with Advancement and Financial Aid.
- Prepare and approve journal entries, to include monthly investments.
- Assist in monthly bank reconciliation.
- Answer routine inquiries from financial managers and other authorized personnel regarding their account activity and/or balance.
- Provide accounting and research support to the AVP for Finance and all areas of the Office of Financial Services.
- Supports the AP Specialist in all the Accounts Payable processes.
- Establish and maintain valid FOAP data and authorizations for Banner Web query access.
- Research various Sales/Use tax questions.
- Assist in the preparation of audit work papers during year-end financial reporting.
- Prepares investment and endowment footnote support as part of the annual financial statement audit.
- Assist with preparation of university 990 tax return.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of accounting theories, principles, methods, practices and terminology.
- Strong computer proficiency with advanced experience using Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to work in a small team on projects and meet deadlines.
- Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Knowledge of posting transactions to a general ledger and performing queries on a database.
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks. Flexibility to change tasks when needed.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a business-related field.
- At least one year of experience in the accounting field. Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting may substitute for experience. Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background and credit checks.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced proficiency using the Banner Finance module.
- Work experience in a university setting.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
Work Conditions:
- Assigned tasks are expected to be completed, overtime may be required especially during June/July while preparing audit work papers and financial statements.
Physical Requirements:
- Job is performed in an office setting where there is a designated office space.
