JOB SUMMARY:

The Cat Skiing Manager manages and oversees overall Cat Skiing operations so that each guest’s guided, backcountry, skiing/riding experience is reasonably safe, positive and personalized; evaluating terrain, snow and weather for optimal conditions; ensuring the department is operating within regulations, policies and procedures of the department and company, as well as those of applicable local, state and federal entities, and within departmental budgetary constraints. This individual is an expert skier, knows Monarch’s backcountry terrain, understands snow conditions and impacts, and has a very high awareness of safety and liability. This department works closely with Ski Patrol, Slope Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Marketing, Ticket Sales and Food & Beverage.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The Cat Skiing Manager responsibilities include, but are not limited too:

  • Be an effective leader within the guidelines of department and company policies, procedures and values, in fulfillment of Monarch’s mission statement to “provide our guests with a quality, personalized mountain experience.”
  • Responsible for ensuring all forms, tracking, verifications and necessary documents are executed and accurately completed in a timely manner. This includes, though not limited to requests, training, payroll, time-keeping, fiscal responsibilities, incidents, disciplinary actions...etc.
  • Perform the hiring and termination of approximately 7 to 10 departmental employees.
  • Provide guidance and oversee the efficient scheduling of department staff based on reservations and snow pack, and adjusting to actual requirements as appropriate.
  • Monitor the Cat Skiing Calendar and work with Marketing and Ticket Sales to try and fill the schedule. Assist with marketing plans and strategies for Monarch Cat Skiing sales.
  • Oversee the initial and ongoing training of departmental staff; oversee specialized guide and Patroller training.
  • Provide timely employee feedback, and conduct qualitative performance reviews of department staff on a regular basis. Include your level 2 managerial staff, as appropriate, in accomplishing A-team reviews.
  • Operate within budgetary constraints for the current season; contribute to departmental budget proposal for the following season.
  • Identify, research and submit departmental capital requests for fiscal review.
  • Work in conjunction with other departments as part of the Monarch team.
  • Develop, review and maintain on a regular basis training materials, manuals, job descriptions and any other documents necessary for the overall success of the department. This includes explosive documentation, run lists, and necessary information within SmartMountain and Survey123.
  • Prepare and oversee department personnel in the event of an emergency.
  • Identify and train personnel for opportunities within the department for the purpose of retaining valuable and interested employees, and the filling of key positions in the event of a departure.
  • Provide professional solutions and courteous assistance in problem solving for both guests and employees.
  • Monitor and maintain the inventory and condition of department supplies, properties and facilities.
  • Recognize liability situations and take appropriate actions with employee and guest safety as the priority.
  • Coordinate the gathering and documentation of weather observations, snow data, explosives use, and terrain skied, to provide a daily avalanche forecast and concise terrain use ledger.
  • Inform the Assistant Director of Mountain Operations of conditions and situations that impact the operational ability and quality of Cat Skiing tours, making recommendations as appropriate.
  • Coordinate training for Cat Skiing and Patrol maintenance work projects.
  • Work with Snow Safety Supervisor to coordinate avalanche mitigation as needed and document explosives inventories & inspections.
  • Coordinate end of season documentation and on mountain tear down projects.
  • Coordinate the orientation and implementation of the Snow Maintenance/Boot-packing volunteer crew and disruption roller operations.
  • Manage first aid, and assist in the evacuation and transportation of injured or sick guests, as necessary.
  • Travel to: conferences, seminars or other related sites.
  • Fulfill Local, State, Federal and USFS regulations and maintain appropriate records.
  • Perform Cat Skiing Guide duties when necessary.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

  • Must be an expert, backcountry skier, able to confidently ski any terrain in all conditions.
  • Ability to maintain a good attitude, set a positive example and work well with guests and employees.
  • Ability to speak clearly and pleasantly, and communicate in the English language.
  • Ability to motivate, delegate and give direction to employees in a positive and non-condescending manner.
  • Aware of surroundings and the ability to identify, respond quickly and provide professional solutions to situational needs.
  • Excellent English reading and writing communication skills.
  • Proficient computer and website navigation skills to include Microsoft Office, ADP.com and SkiMonarch.com.
  • Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials and situations
  • Working knowledge of ski area liabilities and human resource laws as applicable in the state of Colorado.
  • Knowledge of Monarch Mountain backcountry terrain.
  • Must be adept in avalanche forecasting, control, and rescue
  • Must be qualified to operate a snowmobile and have knowledge of snowcat use
  • Must have knowledge in search and rescue procedures.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum age: 21
  • Valid Driver’s License and good, company insurable driving record.
  • Minimum of two years supervisory experience required; preferably in the area of adventure guiding.
  • Minimum of five years of Ski Patrol and/or backcountry guiding experience required.
  • High School diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
  • Must hold certificates of training in CPR and O.E.C. W.F.R or E.M.T.
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of explosive use experience
  • Must possess a Type I explosives permit for avalanche control with the state of Colorado
  • Must have clearance from the ATF/E
  • You must be certified in Pro 1 or Avalanche II. Pro 2, Avalanche III or the equivalent is preferred.
  • Requires the ability to work any day of the week, Saturday through Friday as scheduled, and additional time if workload or circumstances require it.
  • Must be available by phone, or able to respond to a call from your supervisor within a reasonable timeframe, while on or off-duty.
  • Requires working at high elevation (up to 12,000’), with extended exposure to adverse weather conditions, such as severe cold, heavy snowfall, rain, strong winds and intense sun.
  • Must be able to load and unload a chairlift; negotiate steep slopes, cliff areas and tight trees in varying snow conditions including breakable slab, extreme hard pack and bottomless sugar snow on skis and while carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Job requires stretching, bending, climbing, pushing and shoveling snow
  • You must be able to routinely lift moderate to heavy (50 lbs.) loads.
  • Possible exposure to bio-hazards (see JHAs).
  • Some travel will be required to attend conferences and meetings.


JOB TYPE:

COMPENSATION:

  • Is between the seasonal equivalent of a $57,000 - $60,000 per year salary. (Winter Season November 1 - April 30)
  • Eligible for discretionary profit sharing at the end of the winter season.
