Purpose:
The medical assistant will assist providers by performing basic clinical, administrative and housekeeping duties. He or she will interact directly with patients while taking and recording vital signs, preparing patients for exams and procedures, drawing blood, administering medications, removing sutures and performing simple wound care. He or she will collect, prepare and run simple laboratory tests and sterilize medical equipment. He or she will assist the front desk with various administrative duties as requested. He or she will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the waiting area and examination rooms, and monitoring documenting supply levels.
Education and Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required
1 year experience preferred but not required
Completion of an accredited medical assistant certification program preferred
Tasks
Greet and log in patients arriving at the office or clinic.
Escort patient to exam room and Interview patients to obtain medical history and measure their vital signs, weight, height, and documenting all information in patients’ chart.
Ensure all related reports, labs and information is completed and available in patients’ medical records.
Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections or removing sutures.
Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.
Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies
Schedule appointments for patients.
Change dressings on wounds
Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests or admission.
Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms
Inventory and order medical, lab, or office supplies or equipment
Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
Operate x-ray, electrocardiogram (EKG), or other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests
Adhere to all legal and ethical standards
Utilize EMR for documentation, reporting and data collection
Ability to travel to satellite sites and/or other locations for events, training or coverage as needed
Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor to support Centennial Medical Group and FirstCall Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
Skills/Competencies:
Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA regulations
Maintain certifications and skills/competencies up to date.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.
Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
High level of attention to detail with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position.
Ability to adapt easily to changing conditions and work responsibilities.
Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gown and/or mask.
Ability to perform phlebotomy and administer injections, understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
