Instructional Designer

Seeking a creative & strategic Instructional Designer in Richmond, VA to support the development of engaging, effective training programs for utility company employees.

This role is ideal for someone with a background in education, instructional design, or communications, who is comfortable working independently to build training from the ground up. You will be the sole instructional designer on the team, collaborating closely with subject matter experts (SMEs) to design, develop, and deliver impactful learning experiences.

Required Qualifications

• Must submit a portfolio showcasing relevant instructional design work.
• Minimum 3 years experience as Instructional Designer.
• Proven experience with Articulate 360 (used daily), video editing, and microlearning development is required.
• Proficiency in tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere Pro, or similar.
• Adobe Creative Cloud is preferred, Canva is also acceptable for design tasks.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent project management and organizational abilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Bachelor's degree preferred (Instructional Design, Training & Development, Communications, or related field). Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu.
  
  

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

• Create instructional materials including e-learning modules, instructor-led training, webinars, job aids, microlearnings, and short-form videos.
• Use tools like Articulate 360 (Storyline, Rise), Adobe Creative Cloud, Camtasia, or Canva to develop engaging content.
• Organize and manage training assets, folders, and documentation.

Project Management

• Lead training projects from concept to completion: define goals, create timelines, schedule meetings, and manage deliverables.
• Work backward from desired outcomes to build structured learning paths.
  • Example: A 1-hour training video may take up to 3 weeks to develop.

Needs Analysis & Curriculum Design

• Collaborate with SMEs and stakeholders to identify learning needs and skill gaps.
• Develop comprehensive curricula aligned with technical procedures, compliance, and operational excellence.

Evaluation & Improvement

• Implement feedback mechanisms and evaluation strategies to measure training effectiveness.
• Continuously improve content based on learner feedback and performance data.

Content Strategy & Communication

• Support content creation with strong writing and editing skills.
• Apply principles of adult learning and instructional effectiveness to all materials.

• Experience in education, training, or communications.
• Ability to coach others on how to present and deliver training effectively.
• Familiarity with adult learning theory and instructional best practices.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment with minimal direction.
