Summary:

The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of all patrons and staff at the aquatic facility. This position emphasizes proactive accident prevention, consistent rule enforcement, and effective response to emergencies. Lifeguards are expected to remain vigilant, practice lifesaving skills, and maintain physical and mental readiness to respond to incidents, accidents or emergencies. 

Work Schedule:

This is a seasonal, part-time position. Work schedules vary based on facility needs and may include weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • The salary range for this position is $16.00 - $19.49 per hour. Starting pay DOQ and will not exceed the midpoint of the range

Essential Duties/Job Responsibilities:

The following duties are representative but not all-inclusive:

  • Prevent accidents through active surveillance and enforcement of policies, rules, regulations, and ordinances governing pool use. 
  • Remain alert and attentive while on duty to identify and respond to possible incidents or accidents in the pool or on the deck.
  • Maintain order in the pool and take appropriate action to prevent unsafe behavior or injury.
  • Know, follow and consistently enforce all pool rules and policies in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Take corrective action on observed or potential hazards and unsafe conditions and report conditions to the pool manager on duty.
  • Learn, follow and execute all provisions of the Aquatic Emergency Action Plan (EAP). 
  • Provide first aide and emergency care to patrons and staff, including CPR and oxygen administration when required.
  • Report first aid supply usage and shortages to pool manager on duty. 
  • Complete all required incident, accident, rescue and first aid reports accurately and promptly. 
  • Maintain professional appearance, including personal hygiene and proper uniform standards. 
  • Attend and actively participate in all required in-service trainings and staff meetings, including a minimum of four (4) hours per month or twelve (12) hours per season, as scheduled. 
  • Set up pool furniture and supplies as needed. 
  • Participate in pool activities and assist with special pool events held during break time on specific days. 
  • Perform other related aquatic duties as assigned by the Pool Manager or Recreation Supervisor.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 15 years. Valid work permit is required, if under 16 years.
  • Ability to successfully complete all pre-employment swim and skills tests, including: 
  • Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and/or breaststroke. 
  • Tread water for two (2) minutes using legs only.
  • Retrieve a ten (10) pound dive weight from a depth of five (5) feet, surface and swim 20 yards while carrying the weight. 
  • Exit the pool without the use of a ladder. 
  • Successful completion and/or maintenance of current Lifeguard certification prior to the first scheduled pool shift. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to remain focused and attentive for extended periods.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors.
  • Ability to follow directions from supervisors and work collaboratively with coworkers.
  • Strong safety awareness, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to make quick, sound decisions in emergency situations.

Physical, Cognitive and Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, squat, kneel, and move for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to respond quickly and accurately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Ability to function effectively under stressful conditions, including situations requiring first aide or CPR.
  • Cognitive ability to recognize potential life-threatening conditions and apply emergency procedures.
