Refugee and Immigrant Support Services of Emmaus, Inc. is a nonprofit in the Pine Hills community of Albany, NY. RISSE supports refugees and immigrants to build new lives and thrive in the Capital Region. We do this through language classes, immigration and employment assistance, youth programming, and case management.
We are seeking an Adult English as a New Language (ENL) Instructor to work with adult English Language Learners to help them learn to read, write, and speak in English. The RISSE curriculum also includes instruction in life skills to help refugee and immigrant families adapt to their new home. The Instructor works with students of varied ages, backgrounds, and ability levels.
Qualifications:
Associate’s Degree in Education, or a related field, or a high school diploma and ENL/TESOL certification; the ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English; must be vaccinated against COVID-19. Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education; experience in curriculum development; strong interpersonal, administrative and leadership skills; experience in education, and/or human services, and/or refugee resettlement and/or immigrant integration programs.
Illustration of Duties:
- Develop lesson plans: The Adult ENL Instructor will develop and implement lesson plans for English literacy and life skills for adult English Language Learners that are appropriate to students’ ability levels and conform to NYSED Adult Literacy Education standards.
- Assist volunteer tutors: The Instructor will help volunteer tutors prepare for one-on-one tutoring sessions with adult students, to complement classroom lesson plans and support student learning goals.
- Assess students: The Instructor will assess students’ ability levels when they enter classes and throughout their enrollment. This will support the work of the Adult ENL Data Coordinator with the pre- and post-test assessments required by NYSED.
- Maintain daily attendance records: The Instructor will maintain daily attendance records in accordance with DSS and NYSED requirements.
- Communicate with students, other teachers, and leadership as needed.
- Assist with organizing other learning activities or events as needed.
- Training: The Instructor will attend required trainings by ALE and RAEN or upon request of their supervisor, and will maintain all necessary certifications (e.g. BEST PLUS 2.0 and possible Red Cross certifications).
- Programming: Attend staff meetings, professional development and planning days, as well as fundraisers and community events as schedule allows. Engage in advocacy for students, clients and the refugee community.
- Compliance: Comply with all applicable federal and state regulations.

Pay: $21.00 per hour
