Located in the Pine Hills community of Albany NY, RISSE provides comprehensive, year-round English Language and supportive services to the refugee and immigrant community. RISSE operates Youth Programs, Adult English Literacy/Language Program, civics classes, life skills orientation, job search assistance, and more. Our mission is to equip refugees and recent immigrants to build sustainable, independent lives by offering language and literacy instruction and support with life skills and integration into the United State culture and community.
Position Description: Employment Specialist (Part-time)
The Employment Specialist will work in conjunction with the Employment Coordinator and other RISSE staff and volunteers to welcome and support newly arrived refugees and immigrants resettling in New York’s Capital Region. They will work directly with clients to assist them in finding jobs that lead toward self-sufficiency. This will include assessing job readiness, identifying appropriate job opportunities, assisting with the completion of job applications, preparing clients for interviews, coordinating volunteers, and acting as a liaison with employers.
Reports to: The Employment Coordinator, who will at least annually evaluate the candidate’s performance on the basis of the elements of this job description and the personnel policies of RISSE.
Qualifications: The Employment Specialist must have: a minimum of a high school diploma; working knowledge of job preparation, skill development, and employment best practices; the ability to establish effective relationships with colleagues, community partners, and employers; the ability to communicate with clients with limited English proficiency; ability and willingness to work flexible hours; strong communication and presentation skills; a valid driver’s license; and a commitment to RISSE’s mission and values.
Preferred qualifications: At least one year of experience working with refugee families and immigrant integration programs; strong administrative and interpersonal skills; experience with computer applications and databases; experience in human services and/or refugee resettlement and/or immigrant integration programs; multilingual/bilingual fluency.
Hours and Schedule: 20 - 25 hours per week, twelve months per year, non-exempt.
Illustration of Duties:
- Job Placement Services: Assess experience, skills, interests, and goals of clients seeking employment; identify appropriate employment opportunities; assist clients in completing job applications; prepare clients for interviews and assist with scheduling and transportation for interviews; follow up with prospective employers regarding job placements; work with the Employment Coordinator to evaluate and improve processes for job placement services.
- Coordination of Services: Provide job readiness training opportunities for clients; coordinate with other RISSE teams to identify case management needs and ensure English proficiency; provide support that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and client-centered.
- Case File Management: Update client information in recordkeeping system; maintain case files for grant reporting.
- Community Engagement & Coordination: Maintain relationships with local employers; negotiate special accommodations for job-seeking clients; serve as a liaison between clients and employers to resolve conflicts or miscommunications; collaborate with other refugee-serving and workforce development agencies to provide complementary services; represent RISSE in the community.
- Compliance: Assist RISSE leadership in ensuring the integrity, quality, and compliance of all RISSE’s service-oriented programs and all applicable regulations. Ensure volunteers adhere to these standards.
- Training: Maintain necessary training and certifications; attend trainings upon request of the supervisor.
Compensation: This is an hourly, non-exempt position. Compensation is based upon qualifications and experience. This position is grant funded and will continue as long as funds allow.
