Located in the Pine Hills community of Albany NY, RISSE provides comprehensive, year-round English Language and supportive services to the refugee and immigrant community. RISSE operates youth programs, adult English literacy/language programs, civics classes, life skills orientation, job search assistance, and more. Our mission is to equip refugees and recent immigrants to build sustainable, independent lives by offering language and literacy instruction and support with life skills and integration into the United States culture and community.
The purpose of this position is to support students after school with English language homework help and social skills. The teacher also assists in compliance with relevant regulations, maintaining the daily schedule, taking attendance, and engaging volunteers and other staff in meaningful and appropriate interaction with students.
Qualifications: This position requires an Associate’s Degree in Child Development, Education, or a related field or a high school diploma and at least two years of experience working with children ages 5 to 14. In addition, the employee must be capable of managing active children and youth on a playground or in other recreational settings.
Preferred qualifications are: the ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken English; experience in education, and/or human services, knowledge of child development and classroom management; strong administrative, leadership and interpersonal skills; knowledge of basic first aid and implementation of universal precautions; general knowledge of child development and ability to relate with children and adults; willingness and ability to learn educational methodology; and experience working with and training volunteers.
Hours and Schedule: Approx. 15 hours/week. Monday through Friday on school days, from 3 pm to 6 pm.
