About Volunteer Engagement:
Volunteers are an integral part of the San Francisco SPCA community and expand the organization’s capacity to reach its’ Vision 2030 goals and succeed in its mission. The Volunteer Engagement team supports volunteers across the organization (Shelter, Shelter Medicine, Foster, Animal Assisted Interactions, Community Medicine, hospitality, and special events) and strives to be a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive place to all who wish to dedicate their time to the animals and the people who love them. Volunteer Engagement Specialists use current volunteer management best practices to facilitate meaningful, engaging, and safe experiences for volunteers from their orientation date through their entire journey at the San Francisco SPCA. Volunteer Engagement Specialists share a common baseline of competencies, knowledge, skills, and abilities, but have a specialization in particular programs.
The Role:
The Volunteer Engagement Specialist (VES) for Foster will be responsible for assisting in the recruitment, training, support, scheduling, and management of SF SPCA foster volunteers. The position will report to the Manager of Volunteer Engagement for Foster and Shelter Medicine, will be a member of the Volunteer Engagement team, and will work closely with Shelter Medicine and other departments to ensure that volunteering at the SF SPCA is a rich and rewarding experience. The Foster Program works primarily with underage kittens, puppies, and animals with chronic disease that can include both medical and behavioral challenges. This position works a 4/10 schedule and requires at least one weekend day.

You have demonstrated an ability to supervise, train and motivate people. You are comfortable working in a veterinary environment and have a strong commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA. You're skilled at creating and delivering innovative and engaging training and you have an ability to comfortably speak before groups of people. You are able to multitask in a fast paced environment, and calmly and efficiently handle situations ranging from routine to emergency.
Core Responsibilities:
- Maintain an optimal number of Foster Volunteers through recruiting and retention strategies
- Ensure that Foster Volunteers can accurately perform the activities that are part of the Foster Program
- Able to learn and perform any nursing skills deemed appropriate for the foster program, including giving vaccines and oral treatments as required by foster animals, as well as triaging and recognizing medical symptoms with foster animals
- Work with shelter medicine staff to ensure that all medical and safety protocols are followed
- Able to communicate medical needs to volunteers and doctors effectively
- Recognize when animals waiting for foster placement are on medication or other treatment, ensuring that foster parents receive the needed medical prescriptions and supplies and appropriate discharge instructions and training if necessary
- Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances
- Maintain and manage volunteer data and records for the Foster Volunteer Program in Salesforce
- Maintain and manage animal records and paperwork in both the shelter administration system and the medical management system, including, but not limited to scheduling appointments, updating housing locations, and associating foster animals with foster volunteers
- Work collaboratively as a Volunteer Engagement team member with Shelter Medicine, Adoptions, Intake, Behavior and Training, and Marketing teams to assist with organization wide volunteer initiatives, one-time volunteer opportunities, events, and special needs
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills
- Bachelor's Degree or qualifying work experience
- Minimum of one year experience coordinating or developing programs
- A minimum of one year experience working directly with animals
- Previous volunteer, customer service, and training experience preferred
- Veterinary medical knowledge preferred
- Flexibility to work weekends regularly, and evenings and holidays as needed
- Solid computer skills and database experience
- Working knowledge of low stress animal handling and restraint techniques preferred
- Working knowledge of dog and cat behavior preferred
- Understanding of animal welfare issues preferred
Salary and Benefits:
The annual salary for this position depends on the length and breadth of experience. The expected range is $65,000 - $68,000/year.
