Job Description

IPI is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented person to be a part of our team as a part-time Customer Service Assistant. This position will assist our Sales and Customer Service team in ensuring customer satisfaction by providing top-notch support to our customers via phone, email, and the IPI website.

Iowa Prison Industries (IPI) is the job training program within the Iowa Department of Corrections, providing incarcerated men and women with the opportunity for Building Brighter Futures. Incarcerated individuals in IPI work training programs gain the education, soft skills, and hard skills needed to be successful citizens upon release. IPI markets the products and services produced in our facilities to governmental agencies, colleges and universities, public and private school districts, health care facilities and non-profit groups.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receive and respond to customer inquiries; types of inquiries include, but are not limited to, order placement, repair or return needs, product questions, catalog requests, and invoice requests.
  • Return customer calls and emails in a timely and friendly fashion.
  • Works with Customer Service, Sales, shops and management to resolve customer problems.
  • Utilizes IPI’s Global ERP software to perform order processing functions.
  • Learn and utilize IPI’s Lean system for continuous improvement.
  • Perform other administrative and customer service duties as need to fulfill customer’s needs.
  • Complete all required training as assigned by DOC and IPI.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations of IPI and the Department of Corrections.

Preferred Education, Experience & Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, email and the Internet.
  • Accurate keyboarding and ten-key skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Enjoys working with people in an inbound customer service environment.
  • Meet requirements of DAS-HRE Administrative Support Assistant I.
  • Selected candidate must pass background check.

Other

  • Standard hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm (maximum of 19 hours per week)
  • Position will work out of IPI Des Moines Sales Office; Showroom at 1445 E Grand Avenue

(just 2 blocks east of the Capitol)

No specific education or work experience required.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to type at least 40 WPM net as demonstrated by the completion of a typing examination.
