Function Statement:
The overall function of this position is responsible for safely loading and unloading all crossing traffic as well as correctly maintaining toll for the ferry operation. This position is located on the Cameron Ferry, District 07 Unit 870, of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Marine Master 3. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise.  The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.
Assists patrons in a courteous and businesslike manner while performing routine manual work aboard a state owned marine vessel. Collects and records tolls from boarding vehicles and/or pedestrians. Must be eligible for bond. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives. Under the general supervision of Marine Engineers, Marine Chief Engineers, Marine Pilots, Marine Operators or Marine Masters.
The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
40%     Classifies vehicles and registers class and axles of each vehicle boarding the vessel, collects appropriate toll, process change and issues receipts. Completes vessel passenger and vehicle count sheets. 
30%     Performs security and safety checks on vehicles boarding, while underway and departing the vessel. Fastens and loosens hawsers and mooring lines to piers. Operates bilge pumps, traffic ramps and gates on vessel. Lowers and raises anchors, coils and splices rope for rope fenders and makes eyes in cable. Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning, shipping, scraping, painting, changing oil and filters, polishing brightwork, and etc. Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on vessel.
20%     Serves as “Designated Member of the Crew” in accordance with the requirement of the vessels Coast Guard Certificates of Inspection. Assumes control of vessel in the event the Master becomes incapacitated and in the absence of the Marine Master 1.
5%       Operates emergency equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, in drills actual emergencies. Serves as “lookout” to assist in safe navigation and handles lines in recovery of vessels adrift. Searches for recovers drowning victims. Attends required training as requested.
5%       May be required to perform other duties as necessary including: but not limited to emergency/disaster support activities.

Direct from a Ferryboat Supervisor. May also receive guidance from a higher-level Ferryboat Deckhand or Ferryboat Operator. Other reporting relationships may be approved by SCS.

Department of Transportation and Development. Other locations may be approved by SCS.
JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from other marine occupations by the presence of tasks aboard a ferry vessel.

Differs from Ferryboat Deckhand 2 by the absence of independence in performing routine manual tasks aboard a ferry vessel. EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Supports ferry vessel operations by assisting higher-level deckhands in collecting tolls, operating gates, and directing traffic in accordance with safety protocols. 

Supports operation of the ferry vessel by assisting higher-level deckhands in a variety of manual tasks such as fastening hawsers and mooring lines, moving anchors, coiling ropes, etc. 

Assists higher-level deckhands in routine maintenance tasks for the ferry vessel such as cleaning, chipping, scraping, painting, changing oil, polishing bright work, etc.

Assists higher-level deckhands in maintaining and repairing the ferry vessel and its equipment; learns skills in painting, pipefitting, carpentry, electrical and/or welding trades.

Loads and unloads material and equipment for use on ferry vessels.

Learns to operate emergency safety equipment such as firefighting hoses, fire extinguishers, rescue boats, life rings, floats, etc.

Sweeps and washes the deck, engine room and other areas of the ferry vessel.
