The Office of the Secretary, Office of Legal Counsel is currently recruiting to fill an Attorney - Limited Term Employment position located at our central office at 3099 E. Washington Ave., Madison, WI.

NOTE: Limited Term Employment positions are limited to working a total of 1039 hours over a period of 12 months.

NOTE: This position will work approximately 20 hours a week with one day in the office and 1.5 days remote. Candidates must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin in order to be considered.

Position Summary

This position provides professional counsel and legal advice to the Department with specialized legal services relating to determinations under Wis. Stat.

  • 165.76 (1) (f) and 304.137 (2). This position shall comply with all applicable law and the Supreme Court Rules (SCR) of Professional Conduct for Attorneys in the provision of legal services to the Department.

Salary Information

The starting pay is between $37.83 and $58.07 per hour. The pay schedule/range is 09-75.

Job Details

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The DOC will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency to employment. Applicants who fail or refuse the drug screen will not be given further consideration for employment.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have a license or eligibility for license to practice law in the State of Wisconsin at the time of hire and the below knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal and state laws including statutes and code
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and effectively recommend solutions.
  • Ability to organize, manage, and plan work assignments.
  • Ability to effectively work with others in order to accomplish objectives.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective skills in legal research.
  • Knowledge of legislative process.
