Meeting the Needs of Every Learner, Every Day
McFarland School District is seeking highly dynamic candidates to fill an opening for a health services assistant. We aspire to hire individuals who can help us work toward our mission of meeting the needs of every learner, every day and our vision of being an equitable and inclusive community committed to student belonging, achievement, and growth.
What Your Day Will Look Like:
A day as a middle school health assistant is fast-paced and filled with variety. The day typically begins by organizing and restocking the health office with necessary supplies and reviewing any special health plans or medications for students. Throughout the day, the health assistant provides first aid for minor injuries, administers medications, and addresses student health concerns, such as headaches, stomachaches, or injuries from gym class. They document all interactions, maintain health records including immunization records and physician orders, communicate with parents or guardians as needed as well as prepare for school field trips. The health assistant also supports students with chronic conditions like diabetes or asthma, ensuring they have the care and resources required to stay healthy and safe during the school day. The health assistant works closely with the school nurses to manage all aspects of the health office and services provided, including medical emergency preparedness. In addition, they collaborate with teachers, administration, and school counselors to promote health education and wellness initiatives. It’s a role that requires compassion, organization, and adaptability to meet the varied needs of students and staff.
Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- A Valid driver's license
- A High School diploma or equivalent
- Current CPR and AED certification
- Experience working with school-age children, staff, parents/guardians, and physicians
- The ability to meet the health needs of individual students and the school community
- Experience maintaining confidentiality with knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA laws
- A flexible mindset
- Basic computer skills, including e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheets
- The ability to work independently within the guidelines laid out by the School District and the District Nurse
- The ability to perform health tasks consistent with educational preparation commensurate with certification/licensure as delegated by a nurse
- The ability to participate in student evaluations to provide appropriate health-related information when applicable, under the supervision of the District Nurse
- Knowledge of best practices when collaborating with the principal, administrative assistants, and all teaching staff at the assigned school for the care of each student
- The ability to provide clear communication with parents/guardians of students as necessary
- The ability to ensure the collection of all health-related data
- The ability to ensure maintenance of records as mandated by law, grant, or community partnership requirements
Send an application via WECAN, including a letter of application, resume, letters of reference, and transcript, and we’d welcome the opportunity to consider your application.
Why People Stay:
Through one-on-one interviews, McFarland staff say making deep connections with colleagues (including administrators) and students help them feel supported in McFarland. Staff who have worked in other districts noted that in McFarland, class sizes are lower, special education caseloads are smaller, team budgets are larger, and they are glad to work in a community that supports schools, has a positive climate, and a school board that respects teachers. We have a full time librarian, social worker, school psychologist and at least one school counselor in each building.
The District:
The McFarland School District stands out as one of the top academic districts in Dane County and Wisconsin, offering a strong educational foundation that families and educators are proud of. With an average enrollment of 2,100 to 2,400 students, McFarland is large enough to provide a comprehensive EC-12 academic and co-curricular program yet small enough to focus on each student's unique needs. Known statewide for its welcoming atmosphere and student-centered approach, McFarland consistently attracts top-quality staff who enhance our vibrant, thriving community.
