Job Description
Responsibilities:
- Assists in the design, planning, and coordinating of experiments in support of various research projects.
- Grow sorghum plants and pure cultures of Colletotrichum sublineola (a fungus) isolates.
- Conduct pathogenicity test replicates using detached leaf samples.
- Greenhouse tests of pathogenicity when required.
- Selects and applies standard techniques of routine research and keeps detailed records of data.
- Collect data in Exell, evaluate and provide summary analysis results.
- DNA extraction and PCR tests of potential virulence factor genes.
- Assists in preparing and writing proposals to funding agencies; maintains financial accounts related to research projects.
- Assists undergraduate and/or graduate students and other laboratory, technical or field staff involved in research.
- Maintains research equipment.
- Assists with reports, invoices, and cataloging records.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Four years of experience in a biology-based laboratory.
- Experience in nucleic acid extraction, purification and amplification for sequencing is a plus
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of laboratory maintenance and equipment.
- Knowledge of computers and computer software related to the position.
- Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis, statistical analysis, and technical evaluation of research experiments and results.
- Ability to ensure attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
