What are the responsibilities and job description for the Banquet Captain position at The Merion Cricket Club?
The Banquet Captain is responsible for the supervision of banquet service staff during a function from setup to breakdown. They will work closely with the Catering Managers & Director of Catering in overseeing the execution of functions. The ideal candidate for a Banquet Captain position at Merion is someone who has an energetic personality, strong work ethic, self-motivation, and a passion for offering excellent service.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Attain, understand and follow the BEO from the Catering Management Team for every event.
- Communicate with the Banquet Kitchen to determine appropriate equipment needed for each function.
- Facilitate the proper placement of table settings, buffet setup and bar set up with the Banquet Servers based on the information provided in the BEO.
- Communicate with the Banquet Kitchen regarding timing of the event and food service.
- Oversee Banquet Service Staff to ensure smooth and efficient service during the event.
- Aid in all service aspects of the event inclusive of but not limited to: carrying trays, serving meals refilling guests’ beverages, clearing between courses, and bar service.
- Maintain high standards of safety and cleanliness.
- Ensure quality service and tend to event hosts’ requests.
- Facilitate all Banquet Service Team training in coordination with the Catering Management Team and Banquet Server Training Manual.
- Aid Catering Managers in organization of banquet storage spaces and ensure maintenance of these areas is upheld.
- Maintain par inventory levels of goods in banquet storage areas.
- Requisition from receiving as required.
Job Requirements:

- Ability to efficiently plan, organize, and lead the Banquet Service Staff while ensuring member/guest satisfaction.
- Excellent Communication and leadership skills.
- Familiar with up-to-date food and beverages trends and best practices.
- Must have the ability to remain calm in high stress situations.
- Have a passion for continued professional growth in the hospitality / food and beverage industry
- Available to work event-based hours, including days, nights, weekends and holidays
- Must have a professional image and demeanor.
- Requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lb.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
Preferred Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred
- Previous experience in a similar service role
